Who do you follow on twitter?

...if you are on there?

I have resisted up until now, but I have dipped my toe in the water as a source of industry advice. Plus, I can fangirl from a distance over my favourite writers without being a creepy stalker.

Who do your recommend, as an aspiring (or fully paid up) author?

I use Twitter for promo more than any other SM I follow bloggers, publishing people and other authors mostly.

I've been on Twitter for a while but have stepped up my presence there over the last 6 months as an upcoming author... If you search for hashtags like #WritingCommunity and #amwriting there are a lot of published authors, aspiring authors and indie authors on there.

Lizzy Kremer, an agent with David Higham who I think has a best-selling client, possibly Paula Hawkins. She writes an infrequent blog and ran some Zoom events during lockdown.

Does twitter actually work to boost your profile? I have a novel out this year but apart from a few tweets on the day I feel like my time would be better spent actually writing. Plus twitter makes me so ANGRY!

I observe, from a distance, all the agents and agencies that I'm thinking of applying to, and some of their authors and some of the authors I read or admire. Post the odd thought now and then, but nothing controversial. Not that it would make a difference if it was controversial since I only have three followers Grin

It depends how you use it. I only follow other writers, agents and publishers on there and I love it! I never see any of the nastiness of Twitter.

hollowtalk That's a wise approach. I probably need to unfollow all political stuff and pare it right back to books and publishing only.

greenmarlin · 28/09/2021 16:38

bearlyactive I agree that side of it, following people you admire and agents etc is really useful.

LouisaMayAlcott · 28/09/2021 17:13

I only use it as a platform for book promo and as soon as I had a publishing deal I started following and retweeting other authors in my genre and generally networking so now if I retweet them then they reciprocate. And I do a lot of tweeting around publication day for promotion, readers do come and look for authors on SM.
