Finding a writers group or workshop

I'd love to find a (friendly) local - or in these times online - writing community or somewhere that offers workshops/short courses but my searches have been drawing a blank. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Looking for a kick start out of inertia!

Hi Ugly6

Are you willing to state which region you live in? If you can't find a group locally, you could also possibly look into starting one. I did an evening class in creative writing and found this to be a great introduction and a good way to meet like-minded people.

I want to join a couple of groups too but will have to travel a fair bit as there is nothing on the doorstep but I am willing to do so because I too need a kick start out of inertia. Depending on whether you are retired/semi-retired, U3A groups often run for creative writing. Not sure about on-line groups, I think there are few running on facebook but I don't really participate in any of them.

I’d like to find one too! No help but I’m in south east London if anyone knows of any.

Ugly6 · 11/05/2021 22:57

Hi! Thanks for answering - I'm in the North East. Probably me not looking in the right places but I haven't even been able to find any courses running that may spin off into something. Happy to do something online but would like a group of real people to connect with rather than a forum type affair. I'm not feeling confident enough to start something myself although the thought did cross my mind!
Any tips on relevant Facebook groups?

South West here so can't advise re. actual face to face groups and I don't belong to anything on-line.

Try the Workers' Educational Association. I'm biased as I teach creative writing for them in the North East, but the courses are reasonably priced or free if you're on a low income/benefits.

The NaNoWriMo Facebook group is very active and interesting
www.facebook.com/groups/2108709199382454.
It's based on National Novel Writing Month nanowrimo.org but you don't need to have joined in with this to join the Facebook group.

You might also try asking for recommendations on a local FB group.

I'm doing an online course with Pen to Print, it's excellent and I've learnt loads!

pentoprint.org/about/events/

The one I'm doing is about creating comic books and graphic novels but they run courses in a range of different areas.

Bit late to the conversation, but this is a idea look online for courses and workshops.

Ugly6 · 10/06/2021 16:25

Thanks - I've had a look at a few things and started the open university course but really want to find something where I'm interacting in real time with real people! Will have a look at these recent links.

You might find something here: newwritingnorth.com/what-we-do/

Also check MeetUp.com and search for writing groups: www.meetup.com/topics/creative-writing-group/gb/41/newcastle_upon_tyne/

I found my current writers group when I did a one day course. At the end we exchanged emails and 5 of us kept getting together to run our own sessions/ share work.

Also : The Table thetablenortheast.wordpress.com/

I found lots of worshops/ groups on eventbrite. You can filter your search to only include results which are free and use key words in the search bar such as "writing".

@lubeybooby I'm doing that New Year thing, setting goals etc, and had a good look at this. Lots about it looks great, but I just watched their promotional "webinar" (which was meant to be live, but was obviously pre-recorded) and got put off by the hard sell e.g. the dodgy "this all has a value of [think of a number and double it] but you, madam, can have it for a mere..." (see screenshot)!!! Did you join the Academy? If so, was it worth it?!
