Results came out last night and I’m through to the second round! Will have to write a 2000 word story in three days this time. They give you a genre, a character and an object which you must include, I’m crossing my fingers I don’t get landed with sci-fi or crime caper...

I haven't heard of it before, but it sounds very interesting, and very difficult. Congrats on first round and Good luck with second round!

Can you update thread with how you are getting on and what the prompts were?

AppropriateAdult · 08/04/2021 17:57

Thanks!

The first round was in January; there were about 6000 entrants, split into groups of 25, and each group gets a genre of story, and a character and an object/concept which must be included in the story. We had eight days to write a 2500 word story, these were marked by three judges and then the top five from each group progressed to the next round.

For the first round my genre was Mystery, and the character/concept were A Janitor and Insomnia. You get detailed feedback from the judges on each round, whether you make it through or not.

I’ll find out tomorrow what the new prompt is, and will have until Sunday night to turn in the story.

I've not heard of this before either, but it sounds fun. Congrats on the first round @AppropriateAdult - how exciting! Good luck with the next round - looking forward to hearing what genre and prompt you do next and how you get on.

Round 2 prompts:

Horror - Entitlement - A Professor

Hmm...

Interesting! Not sure I'd get on with Horror very well. Good luck.

No, horror definitely not my thing as a writer (although I read enough Stephen King in my youth that I should have some idea of what I’m doing).
