Infringement

I have an idea for a short story collection. I’ve written the first two and drafted the next 10 - I would be aiming for between 20-25 depending on world count.

I have changed names but the point is you are supposed to pick up on references (say for example, stories written from Spike’s point of view in Buffy with name changes - it’s not that, by the way). If you change all names of characters and places but you notice the connections, is it infringement? Do you need to do anything?

I'm struggling to understand but are you writing fan fiction with changes to the characters names but the intention is that fans familiar with the original will understand what you are writing about? Are you then asking if this would infringe the author's copyright and/or any other IPR?

If so then it would depend on the jurisdiction. Different jurisdictions take somewhat different approaches.

Most fan fiction is, I think, not pursued by the rights holders as it's non-commercial. You could argue you will have a little more protection given the change in names but if you intend to sell your works then you might be on shakier ground especially if it's obvious on what work your derivative work is based and in particular if the rights are held by an aggressive company. Anecdotally, I've heard the House of Mouse can be diligent in defending their IP.

Do you intend to self-publish? If so on Amazon or on fanfic sites?

If you are risk averse and have something to say and intend changing the characters' names, why not edge a little further and create something more original?

Good luck.
