Self publishing vs traditional

Evening MNers

I know there are some self published writers on here and I wanted to ask whether you’d tried traditional too and found SP better, or what your experiences are of self publishing? What’s been the trickiest thing about the whole process?

I know this is quite vague but I’m torn between changing my book quite a bit to fit with what my editor wants or going it alone?

Thanks

If your editor is actually good at their job, then the suggestions they are making will improve your book. Are you really sure they are wrong? Sometimes as an author you are too close to the text to see the flaws. Read this about different kinds of editing work.

There is also a middle way between the two paths - unbound.com/ works like kickstarter for books, so not the same as self-publishing. Get enough support, and your book will be published. However there is still an editorial stage because that's a vital part of a sensible path to publication.

Thank you @KihoBebiluPute for your reply. I’m not trying to bypass the editorial stage at all and I’m fully aware of the need for editing. Perhaps my post comes across as arrogant in me sounding like I know more than an editor but that’s not the case at all. My editor is amazing at her job, but it’s not quite as simple as her being wrong and me being right. She’s my editor for a publishing contract and this work is something completely different, which is not her or my publishers area really. So she can edit it as she would any other book, but she’d prefer it to be something else (more akin to the type of book I usually write) whereas I’d rather keep writing what I do for her, as well as try some be stuff.
