Communal Writing Shed

I love writing (just completing my first novel). I am sahm, so write around the dcs. The only downside, is that I find it quite isolating and sometimes I would love to have a chat to other writers (when we aren't all busying away at our work).
Sometimes, I have managed to work in cafes and libraries but you don't really get to know anyone there. I belong to a small writing group but we meet on an ad hoc basis (other members work full-time).

I sometimes wish there was a communal facility for writers. I know you can hire a desk in certain places but it doesn't come cheap. Am I alone in wishing there was such a place, you could pop in and out of but have regular contact with people for a very minimal fee? I think a lot of people prefer to work alone/in silence, it's just sometimes a bit more human contact with others who have a shared interest would be lovely.

It sounds a good idea, but I guess for some people (like me) there isn't always childcare available?

Could you join a course? I'm on a master's where we are in a lot of contact (too much?) and we have writing workshops every week.

Wow blackrabbit, that sounds great. I have thought about a masters but holding back because it is a lot of money and I am currently a sahm.

I know what you mean re childcare. I have written my first novel whilst my pre-schooler sleeps. It took me about 4 years to write but is now just a month or two from being a self published book (not really written for a mass market, tried 5 agents - one rapid no and never heard back from the other 4). Just decided to take my own path and really pleased I have taken control (saved up to have book copy edited plus cover). Didn't go through one of those large companies, I have found 2 individuals each with a speciality of copy editing and book cover design. Copy editing has gone really well and value for money, I think. Will be contacting book cover designer soon.

I'm trying to work around my 3 dcs (2 younger children inc.) so likely will struggle to get much paid work and I suppose it was a bit of fantasy to imagine a lovely writing place that you could pop in and out of and meet like minded people. Plan to join another writing group later (obviously not now). The small writing group I belong to - everyone there works full time. I know only one other writer who is retired.
