Are you based in the UK, OP? Different countries treat self-employment differently.

In the UK, I could be wrong but don't think you need to register as self-employed until you are earning revenue.

Some people make a success of publishing individual strips using Instagram and Twitter (Quarter Life Poetry, Jessie Cave, Forest Fr1ends sort of) then building a readership for book sales or a TV deal (Quarter Life Poetry) or for selling cards/merchandise/illustrations (Jessie Cave and Forest Fr1ends).

Others publish printed graphic novels books and I've seen kickstarter used to fund publication of these.

You may learn from the information available to those who want to self-publish prose using Kindle's platform.

Good luck.
