Hi,

So I've always loved writing but due to personal circumstances it's something I have neglected for a long time. I've always wanted to write a book and following a discussion with my counsellor where she advised me to look at doing something for me and pursuing something I enjoy, I have decided to now is the right time to begin writing something.

I feel a bit clueless as to where to start ( I have an idea ) but seem to be hitting a brick wall as far as structure is concerned and so I thought a writing course could assist.

Has anyone attended a writing course ? Are there things I need to look for when deciding on one? Or, does anyone have any better ideas on what could help ?

I've done loads of courses over the years. If you're just starting out, why not do a general creative writing class so you can try out small pieces, short stories, poetry, etc. I'd just go for something at your local community college if you're finding your feet. If near London, CityLit is excellent and has loads of courses for all levels.

I'd also recommend some books - The Artists's Way by Julia Cameron, Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg and Bird by Bird by Anne Lamont are all great if you want to write but don't know what you want to write yet!
