Does anyone use one of these? Just wondering if it is a useful thing to have or one of those things that I'll buy and regret.

I find I capture a different, often better quality of writing if I speak into a recorder rather than type.

If you are focused on cost, do you have a smart phone, OP? almost all have an audio recorder and many have some form of transcription software built in, though many can be frustrating to use.

I use Dragon on my iPhone to transcribe dictation. The trouble with a dictaphone is you still have to type it up!

I found it quite useful recently for getting a short piece from ‘thoughts’ to ‘on the page’.
But this was for a blog.

I phone recordings

I don't use one to write on, but I do record myself reading near-finished work and then listen to it. Doing that picks up all sorts of little things that could be better.
