How important or significant do you think book prizes are?

Longlist of Bridport Prize first novel today. I submitted something that I knew was good and that an agent contact likes and has asked me to submit the rest of.

I was not longlisted and for some reason now think I should just give up on the whole thing despite having other interest in my novel (I realise that’s a v immature attitude and probably just temporary.)

Agent said that book prizes like Bridport look for specific types of books and you can still have a great book but not win prizes with it.

Anyone in the same boat / have similar feelings?

I don't write in the same field but I can understand how you feel. Awards feel very important (especially when you don't win!), but just think of all the thousands of great books published that haven't won anything.
