Cover for a self-published book

Any suggestions on where and how to get a cover for a non-fiction book?

My first idea was to get one made for me on People Per Hour? I have heard about Canva but am a bit nervous of coming up with something amusingly amateurish!

Also, what is 'createspace' - is that for covers? Or is that an option for 'print on demand' books?

Thanks.

What's it about? Could you take your own photograph of something vaguely relevant?

I am not sure that I really have an eye for design in the book-cover sense. I think it might end up looking a bit corporate or report-like.

Goonwrite.com have a good selection. Might be worth a look there.

Fivver but be careful, some are crappy.

I use this one for most of mine

I can PM you my pen name if you want to check out some of the stuff he's done for me but I'll also vouch for his examples being actual examples of his typical work. My covers often end up on his page.

Thanks Frequency - does he do stuff suitable for non-fiction too?

Yes he does. If You click on his name, it brings up his page, I think he has a gig especially for non-fiction but if he doesn't, just send him a message with what you need.

Ignore the 24 hour turn about. He never gets things back in 24 hours, it's usually more like 4-5 days but I find his work to be worth waiting for compared to other Fivver designers in a similar price bracket.

He'll do pretty much anything. I'm getting him to design business cards and flyers for my business once I'm qualified.

Please don't use Fiverr. It's an immensely unethical model that is contributing to the destruction of the creative industries. People who use Fiverr for graphic design get exactly what they deserve/pay for: amateurish crap.

You could try a pre-made cover - just choose and pay for the one that suits your book best. OK, some of the ones on that site are fairly pisspoor, but a lot are no worse than what you would see on a lot of traditionally published books, and at least whoever produced it is getting more than pennies for their hard work.

I've never used them but have heard positive things about reedsy.com

What's the subject for the non-fiction book, Maybe?
