Hi! Where is the best place to look for writing competitions (mainly looking for short story ones). Writing magazines? Anywhere else? Thanks Smile

I only know of the short story ones I had to enter. They were bridport PRIZE, Fish, Costa and Bristol short story prize. Mslexia is good too (all entry fees though...expensive to entre loads or multiple shorts). Novel comps are a whole other thing. There was one for woman called the Lucy Cavendish. There are a few websites that list all of them too if you Google it plus the writers and artists year book might have lists of them!

Writing Magazine has quite a few writing competitions. You can see it online www.writers-online.co.uk or in libraries.

Google Cathys Calls and Comps. Usually got some good links on there :)

Writers' Forum magazine run a monthly writing competition - rolling entry, so you just submit whenever you like and they put it into the next competition. £3 for subscribes or £6 otherwise, but a £300 first prize every month, so worth a punt!

Off the top of my head, other reputable short story comps include Bristol, Bath, Exeter, Yeovil, Wells, Frome, London Magazine, Fish (expensive), Bridport, Mslexia, Words with Jam, Costa, BBC and Times EFG (you have to be published for those two), HE Bates, Brighton, HISSAC, theshortstory.co.uk (another monthly one), Commonwealth, Manchester. Have a look at Paul McVeigh's website for details of others.

For novels, there's the Lucy Cavendish, mentioned above. Also Bath, Exeter, Mslexia (not every year), Bridport, Yeovil.

If erotic fiction is your thing, noveltrove.com holds competitions regularly.

Coastal Retreats Northumberland are currently running a writing competition for 5-18 year olds to win a stay at one of their holiday cottages.

Does anyone know of any UK up and coming flash fiction/short story competitions?

Are you on Twitter?

If you follow @shortstopsuk, they tweet about opportunities and also do a monthly round up of comps. They have a website too.
