Is 70,000 words enough for chicklit?

And does there HAVE to be romance?

(I'd be graeful for views ...)

Well, chicklit is a sub-genre of romance! I think 80-90,000 is what they're looking for, really.

rats, might have to crank up a love affair then, to fill my deficit if nothing else ...

What's the story about? What makes you sure it's chick lit? Which chick lit writers do you like?

CaroleService · 05/05/2016 18:38

School gate bitchery and one-upmanship.

School gate bitchery and one-upmanship It sounds like an AIBU thread. I'd definitely read that!

ImperialBlether · 05/05/2016 18:56

Me too! Have you read Liane Moriarty's Big Little Lies, OP?

CaroleService · 05/05/2016 19:10

Nope, but I will ... Any others?

Heck of a title for a novel: 'AIBU?'

Wink

I wonder how fast the MNHQ legal team would move on that!

CaroleService · 05/05/2016 21:39

You might get away with 'Am I unreasonable?' or 'Is she being unreasonable?'

OutrageousFlavourLikeFreesias · 06/05/2016 13:58

Most debut novels are between 80k and 100k, so at the moment you're probably a bit light.

"Chick-lit" would generally imply it's about relationships, but I don't know if have to be romantic as such? If it's about school-gate bitchery and one-upmanship, I'd think more about dreadful dysfunctional marriages and joyless affairs. ;-)

CaroleService · 06/05/2016 15:46

Oh I have, Outrageous, I have ...

(Thanks, all, for the advice)

I think The Helicopter Mums would make a good title.

lavenderhoney · 07/05/2016 18:59

There has to be a romantic interest in chick lit:)

As for school gates - the urge to reply when someone ( yes, this really happened) snipes " you're looking very foxy, what are you doing today?" To look them up and down ( yeah, I wear raybans at drop off) and say " lunch with your husband, actually"

But I don't:) I smile nicely and say " it's nice to look nice"

ImperialBlether · 07/05/2016 20:41

You've got to be careful she wasn't just being nice, lavenderhoney!

lavenderhoney · 08/05/2016 06:13

I know, Imperial, it's just her tone of voice that makes me think she doesn't mean well!. But I err on the side of caution always:)
