I've sent my novel off to some agents. Couldn't even press send on the first submission and had to get my friend to do it for me! I feel like an X-Factor contestant because this is all I want to do. It's all I've ever wanted to do. I don't really have a tragic back story though. EEEK!

Has anyone else sent to agents? Did you get anywhere? I didn't expect it to be so bloody terrifying!

Yes, I met an agent through my MA - she asked if I'd send her the novel I was writing. She liked it, but couldn't place it. I'm now in the middle of writing another novel.

What's your novel about? Did you send three chapters? Is it finished?

Good luck! Had to laugh at you having no tragic back story. Don't worry about it, neither do I. But there mustn't be many of us. I actually was just sent a questionnaire about my childhood from someone doing their Masters because a friend of the student knew I had a happy upbringing, but am now an author!

I have finished it. It's taken me six years! I have sent a synopsis and first three chapters to all the agents. It's not very 'literary'. it's a romantic comedy about a witch (yes, really) who has abandoned witchcraft, but has to go back to her family to help with a crisis. There's an ex boyfriend in there, a married man, an evil vicar, blah blah.

Good luck - I know it's terrifying but it's also very exciting. If you don't submit, you'll never get published!

Subbing to agents is a terrifying, yet necessary part of the business. But trust me, once you've taken that first step and got your work out there, it all becomes much easier.

I think it was six years ago that I sent off my batch of subbing letters. And yes, I did get an agent. And yes, I have been writing ever since. So chin up, it can happen to any of us.
