Treatment at creche

Hi, I have 3 year old son. He has been attending a creche from 2 years. As recently, he got better at forming sentences, he says few things which make me worry. Sometimes ( during hyper stimulated situations) his sentences are " I(he) am a mean monster", " I(he) am brown". Sometimes he says he is a small puppy and want me to throw a puppy toy/ ball so he can go fetch that. Creche is the only place where he spends time without me. I have never used either of these words so i wonder where is he learning all these from. Is there any bad intention/ bad treatment behind all this. Should i enquire, intervene or its nothing and I should ignore.

Don’t know about the other stuff but my two year old gs definitely said he was a puppy and would crawl after a ball and return it in his mouth, which is more than the dog would do! He seems to be a fairly normal human child now.

Sounds like pretend play?

I met with other mums from creche and they said their kids don't mention this game which made me more worried. Now am thinking is my son only getting some "special" treatment in creche.

What special treatment?

Is he brown?
Is he pretending to be a monster/dog when he says those things?

Maybe they've been reading books that are different that you have at home and its caught his imagination
Not now Bernard is a book about a boy who then turns into a monster and there are lots of others about monsters (not scary) and dogs at this age (hairy mclarey, odd dog out, etc)

It is fairly common to pretend to be a puppy. My dc have done it too.
He will have learnt the word puppy from books at nursery (probably Dear Zoo!)

My Dd was on.and off a cat at that age 😳 what are you worried about children play games they are sometimes dogs or monsters or whatever it is a development stage.

What are you getting at ?

The puppy and monster thing, perfectly normal part of development. Him calling himself brown could be him noticing differences in people, or from a conversation at creche.

You’ve just reminded me of the colour monster book. DC1 definitely had this read to her when she was in preschool and it was all about feelings. I don’t remember there being a brown one but maybe he’s getting colours mixed up.

DC2 was a cat for a good hour this morning, there's a child in his class who is Spiderman at the weekends. I wouldn't think anything of it.

First of all, thanks a lot all the mums. I feel much better now reading your messages. Might be is all positive. Nothing "special". Might be.

So, he says he is a mean monster only when he happen to behave bad ( hit someone or throw a toy, etc.) He start crying loud and scream "am a mean monster". Or, he will not share a toy with other kids and than scream " am a mean monster".

About "special treatment", as none of other creche kids or mums not aware of this game, I was wondering why only he playing that. And why only he knows that, no one else. But as most of you say, this game sounds normal. Am not much worried.

About "brown", yes he is brown. I never mentioned skin colour to him so was wondering where he learned that but could be any where, books. He is generally calm when he mention that. I think, I should have simple skin colour conversation with him.

If he is brown then he’s just being literal. Kids that age start noticing skin colour differences too, not because they’re being pointed out but because they start getting curious.

The monster thing you’ve explained does make sense with the book actually.

Nursery will definitely talk to all the children about skin colour, and will probably have books about it. Really important to talk about similarities and differences openly and positively.
