Unusual old names in Ireland from 1920s

Thinking of old family and friends names from this era not always Gaelic in origin - possibly church related - my list includes the following - anyone else have any other suggestions:

Malachy,
Jarlath,
Cornelius
Aloysius
Jeremiah

Can’t recall many unusual female names except maybe Philomena, Immaculata, Attracta,

Nora
mossy (I presume short for Maurice?)

Silverfoxette · 07/11/2025 23:51

Cornelius is a family name on my mother’s side, usually shortened to Conor or Neil

Flowers8989 · 07/11/2025 23:55

Lobe the name Alaina for a girl.

elgreco · 07/11/2025 23:59

Ambrose, pascal, dymphna

RosaMundi27 · 08/11/2025 00:15

Anastacia was quite popular, shortened to "Stacia".
Delia, Concepta, Gráinne.

Weligama · 08/11/2025 00:20

Oh yes I had forgotten Dymphna and Delia from my village - also Bina, Delores, Loretta.

Laurence was another old name I remember.

But I’d be extremely surprised if it was used in Ireland in the 1920s.

Lots of male Florences (abbreviated to ‘Flur’) in my family tree, also Corneliuses (usually Con, occasionally ‘Nell’s’). Timothy and Thaddeus, Jeremiah, Hanora, Johanna, Ellen, variations on Bridget/Bridie/Breda, Peggy/Maggie/Margaret, Catherine.

Bina! Short for ‘Abina’ in the one I knew. And yes, lots of Delias. I knew one Eucharia, but I think she was called after a nun aunt.

ChimneyPot · 08/11/2025 00:28

I was at school with a Concepta, an Attracta and a Eucharia all of whom would have been born in the 1970s.

Also 2 of my childrens middle names are listed in previous posts but they are named after family members born in the 1940s or 50s

KnickerlessParsons · 08/11/2025 00:31

I know a Jarlath, who goes by Jarly. I love the name.

ImNotShpanishImEgyptshun · 08/11/2025 00:33

We had a few Binas, but it appears to be short for Sabina.

Weligama · 08/11/2025 00:33

Just remembered one of the nuns in the village was Perpetua

I’ve just been going through BDM’s for a townland and came across Murtagh.

I quite like Murtagh, but I think he was one of the Rackrents in Castle Rackrent…

I know a few 70s-born Conceptas, but all go by Connie. One claims she hopes people assume she’s a Constance.

Pius and Ignatius are two more that comes to mind. I know a cool Iggy who’s in his 70s.

Think a few were names of Popes?

Milo and Kitty (think short though for Michael and Kathleen rather than names in their own right).

Also a Phoebe passed down through one family which always sounded very exotic in our village.

Ursula, Imelda, Marcella, Gertrude - more 1940s/50s - maybe all saints names?

OP posts:
patooties · 08/11/2025 01:53

I know or are related to Cornelius (Con’s of all ages) Marcella and Martina (50’s) Sabina (she’s my cousin and told everyone her name was Sabrina after one of the Charlie’s Angels!) Laurie or Larry (of all ages - both Loretta and Laurence - almost DS name too!) Imelda and Ursula are both brilliant- as is Fionnuala. My nana and grandad were Kathleen and John. Their siblings were Hughie, Sean, Patrick, multiple Mary’s (Mary Jo,Mary Anne, Mary Kate, Mary Francis etc) Joe, Seamus, Jim, Annie, Gerrard, Philomena, Colomba, Oonagh, Ita, Bernadette, Ciaran - there are more but I can’t recall them. Fionnuala would be my choice.

patooties · 08/11/2025 01:55

We also had a variety of PJ’s, JP’s and JonJo’s - all of which I love

Suednymph · 08/11/2025 02:04

Our Sabina was called 'Beenie'.
We also had aunts Anastasia/Kathleen/Margaret which were known as Daisy, Kitty and Pearl. Uncles were most of above names but also uncle Meelie which was originally christened Camillus.
A lot of the female names in this thread mentioned are very nun like names to me.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/11/2025 02:28

My DM’s family. (She was born 1922) siblings

Patrick, Kathleen, Mary, Helen, Norah, Winnie, Eileen.

TheSandgroper · 08/11/2025 03:55

All right, everyone. ‘Fess up. Who had an Auntie Cis? I think can count four in my family in the last hundred years.
