App with downloadable maps for driving in Ireland?

We'll be visiting Ireland in a couple of weeks and will be driving around both the Republic of Ireland and North and we wondered what app would be best for getting directions while driving? We'd need downloadable maps as we're worried about signal in some areas. Any advice on which app it best would be great!

Ever heard of Google? They do maps.

It is possible to pre-download the maps for Google maps, so if you need it only for driving and restaurant reviews (when online), it will be enough.

In my experience the Google maps are useless for hiking, there are other map applications doing much better. The quality of the maps is very similar, majority of the alternative apps is based on using Open Street Map project data.

I like mapy.com, the free version allows pre-download of maps for one country of your choice (and you can replace it with another country)

@FourIsNewSix Thank you that is really useful info I will take a look at Mapy.com! Google maps used to be good but it seems to be going down hill a bit more recently.

In my experience Google maps can be really poor. Sending us over a winding mountain road instead of the safer national road.

@loveisanopensore Yes I agree, should have made it clear I was looking for alternatives to google maps.

I’m actually in the market for a proper map for the car as I had a rather frightening experience lately as my phone wasn’t working so no Google and I was in an area that I didn’t feel safe in.
