LASHING RAIN ON ST. SWITHIN’S DAY

Flippity Flip it’s lashing rain today, St.Swithin’s Day.
So 40 days of rain in store according to the legend.
Does anyone know has it ever been proved as nonsense ?
What was St.Swithin’s Day like in previous years and what was rainfall like in the 40 days following ?
Surely some scientists have investigated?

Oh v interested to know, too!

Yep. I'm just watching the Met Office ten day trend, and the very lovely Alex Burkhill says that there's absolutely no evidence of the 40-day thing being true. So relax!

Given how heavy the rain has been today, I'm considering building a boat.

It had better not be true! 😱🤞

Carlow weather put this up earlier, so looks like we're not doomed yet 🤞

Thought of this today when I went out in the rain.
I know the gardens, reservoirs and farmers need the rain, but today was a very bad day for the rain to start after weeks and weeks of gorgeous sunshine here.

From BBC website

Is there any truth to the folklore?
No.
The Met Office, which look after weather statistics for the UK, has said that since the start of records in 1861, there has never been a record of 40 dry or 40 wet days in a row following St Swithin's Day.
The closest we have got in the modern record was in Cassley, Highland, which once experienced rain on St Swithin's Day and on the following 34 days.

So hopefully we're ok. :)
