So it is fecking hot!! every window in the house is open. Was going to have a BBQ. I have just seen a slurry tanker drive over our lane. Surly a farmer cannot think it is reasonable to spread slurry today in this weather. Am I being unreasonable.

Farmers need to make the most of the good weather.

Don't live in the countryside if you don't like farm smells.

I don’t think you’re being unreasonable. The farmers near here all seem to wait for the hottest weather before they start with the slurry. I don’t understand it myself.

I can understand not spreading in wet weather but it’s been dry for days and waiting for the hottest day of a dry spell seems baffling to me. Unless it’s a farmer who has a job during the week or something like that 🤷‍♀️

Time, tide, and slurry spreading wait for no man (or no woman's barbecue).

I do like the smell of slurry so this wouldn't bother me.

Although, that said, I once lived next to a chicken farm that spread chicken manure on the fields, oh my goodness that was fucking wrank, and the dust from it was actually quite suffocating. It coated everything (think windows, cars), with a thin layer of dust, so the council did tell them they weren't allowed to spread on certain days depending on wind direction etc., after they received numerous complaints.

I quite like the smell 😂.

I think you are being unreasonable though, farmers need to do things in certain orders and that’s just the price you pay for living in the country.
We have a bird scatter going off regularly here, villagers keep complaining but I just feel it is part and parcel of life.

Maybe the slurry tanker was just full of water (or maybe not) as he is desperate to make his grass grow, you know, so he can feed his cattle or sheep so he can produce the food you and many others would want to put on that BBQ.

Martymcfly24 · 12/07/2025 20:22

@ninjahamster noooo it's vile.

They spread it in the field behind my school right up to the fence to the yard while the children were out playing and we all had to come in. 🤢

If he's spreading it in this weather it's because he has to, whether the tanks are full or he works elsewhere during the week etc. The very hot dry weather is not ideal for the ammonia absorbtion? Interaction? or so I was, always told

I think you could be right! He went back and forward about 5 times but no smell arose. My Dad who is a farmer says no way would they spread in that heat as it would burn the grass even more. I am so hot I think I just crashed out at the sight of a slurry tanker.

Oh Op the smell just turns me and if it gets on the clothes on the line it just has to be re washed. I normally don’t give a shit (excuse the pun) but yesterday was just exceptionally hot. But anyway I have been informed it would be like grass murder to spread on a day like that. So it must have been water in the tank 🎉
