Can a GP prescribe codeine for a detox?

My brother is addicted to codeine and wants to detox before going to the Rutland Centre. He was seeing a methadone GP a few years ago but after talking to a psychiatrist in the NDTC, he decided that methadone wasn't suitable and prescribe codeine to detox. Unfortunately, he didn't have money to fill the prescription and relapsed.

He now has a medical card and has moved to Meath. He'd like to know if his new GP would be comfortable writing a prescription for a detox.

It depends how much your brother is willing to co-operate with treatment.
It also depends on his honesty with his GP and the extent of his dependence on Codeine and possibly other substances?
He will have to be totally honest about his usage and the amount he takes.

The GP might well refer him to an outside community detox centre who will come and assess and possibly treat.
This is because addiction is complex and 'just weaning off' is often not sufficient or successful in treating.

I wish your brother well.

Sorry, just seen this is a couple of weeks old.
Hope your brother has accessed appropriate help.
