Skorts

Ive just seen a lot of Irish women make videos about this issue on tiktok

. Skorts are the tiny skirts that women have to wear when they play camogie in ireland. its mandatory to wear them

A lot of women are protesting that they dont want to wear skorts when they play camogie, as they are uncomfortable and too revealing

One county team asked could they stop wearing them. It was refused by the county board.

There are loads of videos online where women are saying that skorts are uncomfortable, and that they dont want to play a sport in a mini skirt.

Why on earth arent they being listened to by the GAA/county boards?

I think that skorts are great - comfortable, practical & stylish. Have never heard anyone say the opposite. DD’s school used to make the girls wear ugly baggy football shorts or tracksuit bottoms for sport, all of the girls were very happy when they brought skorts in as an option!

The one word that's important there is option! Why can't there be a choice of shorts or shorts? From a distance the look identical anyway. Once the colour is the same I cannot wrap my head around why it's an issue?

It does seem to be an issue and is in the news currently. Linked below is an RTE report from today.

But shouldnt girls have the option of what to wear.

They are not able to choose.

Some want to wear skorts. Sone want to wear shorts. They should be allowed to wear what they want

I wear both skorts and shorts to play sports and find them both as comfortable as each other. Skorts just tend to be cycling shorts with a skirt attached so can’t see how that makes them uncomfortable. Are camogie skorts different in any way?

I think one issue they have is that the skorts they wear in camogie can be extremely short, so its like playing sport in a mini skirt

You have the option to wear both.

Women in camogie are currently not allowed to wear shorts. Many of them want to wear shorts. They havent been allowed to

The county board is all women as well I believe which makes this decision even worse .

Mannatan · 04/05/2025 15:11

Its disgusting to be honest. Its so archaic.
That theyre not allowed to wear shorts.

Let them wear shorts!

There's a lot going around on social media about it at the moment.

One video shows two teams, dublin and kilkenny, turning up to a match in shorts, and the referee and officials refused to let them play in shorts

82% of county camogie players voted against them but congress ignored that, I read a lot of the delegates were male.

Mannatan · 05/05/2025 10:50

Simon harris has now put a post on instagram about it, saying that the women shoukd be allowed to wear shorts.

The county boards are stupid because they love to control people, but women wont be controlled.

This will become an international thing. And it will put shame on the county boards.

Do you remember when the norwegian volleyball team protested because they wanted to wear shorts and they werent allowed to fir a while. It became a huge international thing all over the world.

Eventually they were allowed to

A lot of womens sports wear is way too skimpy, and they were designed by men for the male gaze. Not for womens comfort.

Gymnasts have often complained about the leotard being uncomfortable and way too revealing aswell.

I coach gaa and have 3 daughters that play football and camogie. They would all prefer to wear shorts not skorts. Others prefer skorts. As posters have said the key is choice. We are trying to keep women in sports not put them off. If you have girls on the pitch feeling uncomfortable and self conscious in skorts why would they continue playing? It is not like hockey, camogie is a very physical game where they are jumping, running, aggressive tackling etc, the skorts are flying up constantly and shorts underneath are like knicker shorts. For some women they can be extremely tight and revealing. I know one of my daughters in particular gets extremely uncomfortable and paranoid wearing one when she is on her period and it definitely effects how she plays.

I also think the picture of the male ref ordering young women off the pitch to change was terrible optics for the sport. Camogie association needs to seriously address this, there would be no camogie without their players, respect them and listen to them. I would love if the male hurlers all came on in skorts in solidarity, wonder if there is anything in their rules to say they can't wear skorts worth testing it 😂

honeyrider · 06/05/2025 09:44

The two hurling pundits on the Sunday Game support the camogie players.

KnickerlessParsons · 06/05/2025 09:48

Dont wear them. If none wears them, they can’t prevent you all from playing.

they can’t prevent you all from playing.
But they did

The Kilkenny and Dublin teams didn't wear them on Saturday and were ordered back to change or else the match couldn't be played. I apprecitate they could have accepted that "punishment" and not played the game but you have stadium full of fans, coaches, medics etc so they were in an extremely difficult position and ultimately decided to change and play the game of sport they love.

Should be optional for men AND women 😊Equality much?

Then the transwomen on the ladies teams will fit in nicely, and vice versa.

That's the issue that vexes me like no other though, the skorts is a minor thing in comparison.

Its about control of women. Thats not a minor thing.

In so many sports , womens sportswear was designed by men for male's sexual graitificauton.

Thats why we had skimpy gymnastic leotards for women in gymnastics, while the men were covered up

@Mannatan I'm not disagreeing with you at all. Not only is it a male control thing, it is also completely sexist, which is the part I disagree with.

Are there any females on County Boards, and if so are they outnumbered in decision making I wonder?

KnickerlessParsons · 06/05/2025 12:18

Kilkenny and Dublin shouldn’t have caved in. If you want to get people onside some pain will be involved.
If all teams stop wearing the skorts and if all teams actually go off the pitch when ordered to for not wearing the skorts the governing body will see sense quite soon.

Yes.

But they probably caved into pressure from officials, managers and supporters.

They are used to do everything that the officials tell them, so its probably hard to stand up to them. GAA female players have never been allowed to have a voice in anything

Someone is probably saying to the players "if you kick up a fuss about this, you won't play at all in the next county match".

Theres a culture of control and not letting anyone have a voice, in ladies GAA

This

Their place on a county team is always in jeopardy. Don't think people realise how competitive and tough it is to get to this stage of your sport. 20 player panel thousands wanting that place. They shouldn't have to lose out personally because of this.
