Garda Vetting

Can anyone explain to me why you have to get separate Garda Vetting for each organisation? Why can’t there be a central register or who is vetted, with the same expiry as currently, and just have each organisation reference there? Seems like very inefficient process to get a separate one each time?

help me out please or am I missing something?
Have tried googling but it doesn’t explain why not other than to say it can’t be transferred?

Because that's how we do it here. Makes no logical sense and is entirely a waste of time, money and resources. For those that need it for work at least it should be issued as a card and be our responsibility to have it renewed when due in order to keep our jobs. Ive worked with children for 20+ years so have had valid vetting all that time, but have to get seperate ones done when volunteering with kids sports or community groups

At one stage a few years ago I had four separate Garda vettings. Absolute madness.

It's the same in the UK, I had to get one for a new job and at the same time for a charity I had started volunteering with. It goes by the organisation, they have to apply for each member individually.

It is crazy I am vetted for work, for GAA and for school PA. Mad and a complete waste of resources and time and it slows the system up so those that need it before they can start work as in childcare or social care have weeks to wait before they can start a job

So glad it’s not just me that thinks the current system is wasteful!!

It's the same all over Europe.

It's definitely a pain, when you work in any job in Europe.

I'm Irish. just worked in a job with children in Spain. I had to get a European sexual offences check which took ages. That came back fine.

I just got a new job in the UK. I now have to do a new DBS check to show I'm safe with working with children. Which is also taking ages to do.

Fair enough I suppose when it's between different countries. But when it's just in ireland it should be a bit quicker.

I think if you live in the UK full-time now , you can do it a bit quicker on the central database. Like you just update the dbs check. You don't have to keep applying for a new one

I wonder why though, I thought it was just an Irish inefficiency but if it's the norm there must be some logic to it. It's also a fairly new concept so some thought must have gone into it when setting the system up. I would understand if it was set up years ago when police systems didn't link up and the local address was the identifying item but these days with national systems and PPS numbers it doesn't seem to make sense.

I think the thinking behind it is this:

If you got garda vetted three months ago. And then you apply for a new job.

You have to do a new garda vetting, as you could have been charged with an offense within the previous three months.

They need to constantly check for updates on the criminal register.

Its the fact that thry ask you for every address FROM BIRTH! I'm 50 years old - I have lived in about 30 different houses. That info should at least be linked to your PPS number and DOB. Im always worried that I am going to put in slight variations (and tbh, the list of ones I enter are getting shorter each time), and they are going to think Im trying to hide something.

I never put them all in.

For example I kept my parents address as my postal address for a long time. Even when i was living in other rented flats.

So for a ten year period I lived in 6 different addresses

But Instead of me putting
My parents address
Flat 1
Flat 2
Flat 3
Flat 4
Flat 5.

I just put my parents address for that whole period.

I can't be bothered. And I've never had further questions.

Me too @Abbygabby87 the first time I put in everything, student accommodation during term time and overseas addresses where I had summer jobs. But now I put my parents address until age 22 because that's where my post usually went and where I kept ties. It's not entirely wrong either.

But I could also have commited a crime in the 3 years that I have to get it renewed for work too, but that doesn't bother anyone

My husband volunteered to help out with coder dojo in the local library and had to do two different Garda vettings - one for coder dojo org and one for the county council as they run the library. He had also recently completed it for somewhere else he was helping out. No wonder it's difficult to get volunteers.

True. But Why don't you have to get it renewed?

The last time I worked in a youth work job in ireland, we had to get our vetting renewed every year.

I don't know, the Regulations don't require yearly renewal. The system would probably collapse altogether if it added an extra 50,000+ renewals a year......

I have to get mine renewed. I think it depends on the policy within the organisation you are being vetted for. I think most have to be renewed every 2 years

Mine could actually be every 2 years now that I think about it. When I first started working they never seemed to look for it to be renewed which is mad
