Passport name change & lost passport card

Odd situation but hopefully straightforward question… I’m getting married next month (civilly) and then six weeks later having a ceremony abroad. However, I lost my passport card recently on holiday (but not the book) and need to report it lost probably sooner rather than later. I’m planning on changing my name after marriage and wondering whether it’ll be possible to submit the name change paperwork and renew my passport between end of April and late May/early June when I need to travel, or if I’ll have to wait until the summer after honeymoon to renew and report the card as lost. Too risky or straightforward? Last time I renewed my passport the turnaround was something like 4 days.

What's a passport card? Can you travel without it?

I'd say six weeks was long enough unless the lost card delays it, but get the application in asap!

It’s just a little card that I sometimes use instead of the book. You can travel without it as long as you have the passport, but it’s also a separate travel document valid for the EU. I’m more concerned that I’ll have to leave it a few months before reporting it lost, and I’m pretty sure I dropped it on a ski slope.

I got a new passport recently & it only took 2 weeks to arrive (once it finally accepted my photo - pain in the arse!)
You could risk it between civil ceremony and wedding, but if it's over the busy season it might take longer.

Given you can travel on the passport I think I'd use that and change it when you get back.

Can't you report the card lost and just not reapply til after, or does it cancel the whole passport? I wouldn't wait to report that missing.

Whycanineverthinkofone · 16/03/2025 13:45

Yes I would have thought you can just report the card lost? Or does that cancel the whole passport?

if you dropped it on a ski slope I’d be worried about identity theft if someone found it so probably would cancel, even if it’s a pain.

can you hold off applying for a renewal? Or does letting your passport lapse mean it’s a new passport application? I think when I got mine the documents said it’s a renewal unless it’s been like 10 years? I can’t quite figure if you need it in the meantime?

On the website it says you can just report it lost “when you apply for a new one”, which isn’t super helpful. So I’d have to apply for another in a few months anyway.

@Whycanineverthinkofone you are correct it’s a renewal, it’s just that I’ll need the passport late May/early June to travel and I’m about to change my name (end of April) so if I renew now I’ll have to renew again in a few months.

I’ll keep looking and see if there’s another way to report it lost, thanks!

Are you in the UK? I have never heard of a passport card.

yes, the OP is based in Ireland

I'd just ring them up and discuss it, if you don't give your name they can't hold it against you!

I don't understand why you would need to change it again in a few months. Would you just not wait until it expires before changing the name on it?

Information on what to do with a lost/stolen passport - https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel-and-recreation/passports/replacing-a-lost-or-stolen-irish-passport/#:~:text=Passport%20Office%20immediately.-,You%20can%20report%20your%20passport%20as%20lost%20or%20stolen%20when,671%201633%20or%20by%20webchat.

I assume it's telling you to report on renewal as they are expecting you to renew because it is lost rather than telling you to hold on until renewal. Did you get a police report as apparently you will need that to get a new one if it's been lost or stolen. Although it's talking about the passport and it's not clear if the card counts as the passport with the same rules.

This page (https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel-and-recreation/passports/irish-passport-card/#:~:text=More%20information-,What%20is%20an%20Irish%20passport%20card%3F,a%20valid%20Irish%20passport%20book.) says you should report a lost/stolen card immediately.

I'd say your best bet would be to phone the passport office or use the webchat.
