Reversing cameras..any good?.

My ds is a safe and confident driver but hates parking. I was thinking of getting a reversing camera as a birthday present for him. Are they worth it? Also there are 'rear view ' cameras which are different and maybe more complicated to install. Grateful for a info or experiences with them.

DD is 20 and passed her driving test last year - absolutely hated parking so the reversing camera has been a godsend! Her instructor’s car had one so to be honest I think she would’ve really struggled to ‘go blind’ after learning with it there. All of my cars in the past 10 years have come with one, makes life so much easier and I’d be very reluctant to buy/lease a car without one nowadays.

I like mine, except that it gets dirty with country driving, so stops being useful until it is cleaned and it doesn't work in the dark.

Thanks. His car is 05 I think so I suppose it wasn't standard back then. Also the hint about cleaning ...Good point.

I argue with mine when it's beeping away at a leaf, but it's handy.

I couldn’t live without it at this stage! I hate driving DH’s car as it hasn’t got one and feels much less safe.

Pinknotpurple · 30/01/2025 15:27

I wouldn't be without mine!

Wemaybebetterstrangers · 30/01/2025 15:28

Yes!! No brainer for me 🙃

Abhannmor · 30/01/2025 15:36

Thanks again everyone. That's that then! Might be a boring prezzie but important. Wish they existed when I was learning. A friend of mine , decades ago , was crap at parking so she bought those really fat tyres to save wear and tear !

i love mine, gives me more confidence parking because of back issues i can't twist and turn as well as i used too so its a game changer for me x

but im 58! at 20, i do feel these young drivers should be able to park a car!

What's the point in struggling with something because you should be able to do it at your age because of some bizarre opinion of an older woman on the internet?

Do whatever you can in life to make things easier for yourself! Why the heck not!

SparkyBlue · 30/01/2025 16:53

I love mine . It's been a godsend in car parks .

Well.. considering my 20yo has an impressive array of metalwork in her back and can’t twist that would be rather difficult!

Even with no limitations I really don’t see the issue. Yes, they should be able to park without one but a camera gives you far better visibility. Car parks are getting tighter by the day and I feel far safer with mine. There’s a reason that reversing cameras being your insurance cost down!

obviously there are exceptions! I never said there was an issue, i said young drivers really should be able to control their cars when they pass their tests!

I absolutely love mine, but i CAN park my car without it if i need too.

as for insurance being cheaper because of them? i've never been asked if my car has a reversing camera? i'd probably say the most important add on to any car nowadays is a dash cam.
