Has anyone had any experience of getting a private ADHD assessment in Dublin, and is there anywhere you would recommend? Am looking to have my DS (11) assessed.

Thank you!!

Have you VHI? If you do their paediatric centre has a child psychiatrist who performs assessments. Depending on the policy it is much cheaper than going direct.

If you have a Facebook account there is a private group (ADHD Irish support group) where you can find information on who is taking on patients, costs and likely waiting times.

As a parent who has a child who’s been with both public and private systems - I would recommend trying to go publicly in parallel, if possible. Our experience of CAMHS has been excellent and it’s obviously much cheaper than going privately.

Thanks so much for this. I have Laya. I will call and see if they have similar. I'll also look at the Facebook group. And thanks for the tip to go with both. It feels like a minefield! Really appreciate you responding!

Not at all. ADHD is very hard but the medications can be life changing. Wishing you and your child all the best. I hope you’re not waiting too long to be seen.

I’d recommend watching Russell Barkley’s videos on YouTube. I found them really helpful as a parent trying to understand the condition.

I think this is the right one - it’s very long but it doesn’t need to be watched in one sitting - it’s a lot to process. I used to listen to it on headphones when out on walks or when driving in the car.

Thank you for this. I will definitely look at that.

I was just coming back on here to say that we have gone through our GP and received a letter back saying our case wasn't suitable for CAHMS. But I've looked again at the letter this evening and they did also send an application for assessment of need. I presume that's the first step for the public system to get an assessment?

If you are going private just bear in mind that while a psychologist can diagnose they can't prescribe medication.

When my son was diagnosed, I spoke to ADHD Ireland and they recommended Dr Manoj Parameshwar as he is a private paediatrician who can asses but also prescribe medication.

I went private with my son as the waiting list for assessment with CAHMs was three years. This was 2 years ago though so that may have come down.

Ahh that's a really important point to bear in mind. At the moment I feel like it would just benefit us all to get some kind of diagnosis, to be able to name it, but you're right - medication is important. Thank you.
