Anyone with Virgin Media tv and broadband

Help please.
We need to upgrade our Virgin tv boxes.
Yesterday I was told that if I upgrade I will be unable to record any BBC tv programmes.
Is that true ?

I record programmes to watch later.
Would Sky be better ?
Any other options ?

Apparently the new box from VM records to the cloud (it has a small hard drive, so it has to download recordings to play them), and it is restricted from recording anything on BBC and RTE. RTE programmes can be watched through their Player, but the BBC iPlayer is only accessible to UK licence holders.

Here's a review of the new VM box:

And a look at the other providers:

It looks like Sky Stream doesn't record at all, but the Sky Q box does, if it is still available.

We’re keeping Sky Q for this reason, even though it’s bloody expensive.

My parents have Eir TV / Broadband and you can’t record programmes on them either. I think Vodafone will let you but not 100% sure.

Thank you for your replies.
As far as I am concerned not being able to record to watch at your leisure and skip the ads is a backward step. For flip sake !!
