Balck tie wedding at Christmas

Asking in Craicnet as I know irish weddings are a class apart in the style stakes 💃

Good friend is getting married the week between Christmas and New year and is going black tie. Can't wait to get out a bit of style but I don't want to invest in another one off wear dress (am looking at a rental place too, but no joy as yet). Anyway, I found this beauty of a trousers and top combo. With a black cropped tux style jacket, and a bit of a yoke in my hair, would this pass muster?

It's a really fabulous outfit but... i think you may feel under-dressed for black tie - esp at Christmas time. I rented from here before and the woman who owns it was v. helpful https://designerroom.ie/

I agree with the above. It looks good (and I love the colour) but underdressed for black tie even with a jacket and accessories. No suggestions where else to look, sorry.

TeaHagTeaBag · 10/09/2024 16:28

Thanks for the link @lolarocco . I'm barely over 5ft so renting will be a challenge but I'll keep looking. Some gorgeous dresses around if they weren't miles to long for me! In my head I'd wear a gorgeous black tux but without long legs, it's a harder one to pull off...

Vinted is your friend here, plenty of people buy outfits like this and wear once. A decent seamstress will be able to alter to fit.

TeaHagTeaBag · 10/09/2024 16:44

Vinted doesn't ship to Ireland unfortunately

I'm going to go against the grain and say i think it would look fabulous. Im not sure about the cropped jacket but I think the outfit is great

Are you in Ireland? Irish weddings are dresser than English ones, on average, and one where black tie has been specified definitely will be. The outfit the op linked to is nice, but she would be underdressed for the occasion.

Fink · 10/09/2024 19:54

I get around the spending money to only wear it once problem by just choosing to wear my nice dresses all the time. I decided about 10 years ago to not let them go to waste, so now I turn up to Sunday Mass every week really overdressed. But I don't care, at least I'm getting some wear out of them!

To be fair, I don't actually turn up in black tie, I dress down the accessories, and the parish has quite a lot of people who come in Sunday best anyway. But I just embrace it, and usually no one blinks an eye.

SparkyBlue · 10/09/2024 20:21

@Fink I am in Ireland and I don't think OP would be underdressed at all. I think it's a lovely understated elegant look.

Fink · 10/09/2024 21:06

@SparkyBlue ok, just checking on the context. Opinions differ, as with everything.

longdistanceclaraclara · 10/09/2024 22:35

It is fab but I think underdressed. My family would wear that to a baptism or FHC.

TeaHagTeaBag · 11/09/2024 00:00

It's interesting, isn't it, if it was a dress in that colour with that neck line and a midi length skirt, I wouldn't have thought twice about wearing it. Maybe the trousers dress it down? Anyway, I'll keep looking and buy the outfit for Christmas anyway. Thanks for the opinions.

@Readytoevolve ,what am I doing wrong on depop? I've looked before but only ever seem to see piles of shein cast offs.

To me black tie wedding means full length dress, or at least 3/4 length (but I'm old, and it's been 10+ years since I've been to one). @TeaHagTeaBag it's a beautiful outfit and would definitely suit a normal wedding, but don't think it's black tie. Do any of your friends have something you could borrow?

nzeire · 11/09/2024 10:03

Oh I think it’s FABULOUS! And perfect for black tie!!!

Readytoevolve · 11/09/2024 10:52

For Depop search hash tags like #weddingguest and search labels like #clubL #reiss #brownthomas.

tbh it is slim pickings on there and too much tat being sold, but you might find a gem. Once you start looking your search will start to refine for you to show you what you like.

I do too.
And I've been to a couple of black tie weddings around Christmas in Dublin.

GoldenNuggets08 · 12/09/2024 18:11

I agree with others that it's top casual for a black tie wedding unfortunately!

MarieDeGournay · 13/09/2024 14:04

Well I think you could dress that outfit up with bling and it would be super.

Tux style jacket sounds good too. It's all in the accessories to elevate it to black-tie level, I think.
You'd stand out from all the dresses. Channel your inner diva as you walk regally into the venueSmile
And it looks like you could re-purpose it for other events, so makes good financial sense too.

polkadotclip · 16/09/2024 11:16

It's not too casual for black tie if you have glittery sparkles with it.

Have been to a billion Irish black tie weddings.

Everything from debs dresses to Sunday best goes. If you have fancy shoes and a glittery bag and fabulous hair you'll look great.

I fully agree. 👍

HelterSkelter224 · 16/09/2024 12:25

I think it's fab, and a modern take on black tie. With gorgeous shoes / accessories/ hair I don't think you'd be underdressed at all.
