Boypants WTF?

MessyHouseHappyHouse · 05/07/2024 14:35

I’ve just messaged Dunnes Stores to complain about them labelling some women’s knickers (that look like a shorts style) “boypants”. I suggested it sounded slightly pornographic and vulgar and I also asked them if they’d be calling a style of men’s briefs “girl pants” any day soon?

I know we have ‘boyfriend’ jeans (which is bad enough) but why would any grown woman want to wear underwear linked to little boys??

Ewww. 😳

"Boy shorts" have been around for years as women's underwear.

Needmorelego · 05/07/2024 14:39

That name for that style has been around for donkeys years.

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/07/2024 14:40

It's true that they wouldn't label men's briefs 'girl pants'. And that's because 'boy' is a promotion and 'girl' is a demotion. Good for you. Just because it happens all the time, doesn't make it better.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 05/07/2024 14:41

I’m surprised that they are labelled boy pants rather than women’s boxers.

Needmorelego · 05/07/2024 14:42

@SonicTheHodgeheg that style isn't boxers though.

TM1979 · 05/07/2024 14:43

Boy pants would make me feel 3 years old.

thisiswheretheseagullfliesaway · 05/07/2024 14:44

Dunnes have been selling them at least twenty years. Some places label them as boy shorts. Very comfy whatever they're called.

Needmorelego · 05/07/2024 14:52

Yeah the name isn't new....in use since 1974 apparently.

I don't think men's underwear styles are based on the designs on women's though. I think it is all the other way round for "practical" underwear. "Girl pants" would be frilly lacy things.

@Needmorelego @SoupDragon

Why are you both so dismissive?

Boy shorts and boyfriend jeans are clearly not in the same ballpark as boypants.

It’s all one word for a start and pants is an article of clothing normally linked to very young male children.

I assumed it was some marketing person’s weird fetishisation of little boys to be honest, because in my view, it’s hardly a suitable description for an adult woman’s piece of underwear.

I disagree with you. 🤷🏻‍♀️ My mind certainly didn't leap to "fetishisation"

I didn't realise you only wanted people to post if they agree with you. Sorry.

Needmorelego · 05/07/2024 15:33

@MessyHouseHappyHouse I was "dismissive" because it's just name for a style of underwear that has been called that for years.
The "boy" doesn't have anything to do with children - like adults who are dating call each other boyfriend/girlfriend.
Phrases like "Girls night out" when a group of women have a night out or "meeting up with the boys" for a group of blokes meeting at the pub - while a bit cheesy - are just phrases.
It's literally just a name.

Needmorelego · 05/07/2024 15:34

Very few boy children wear that style of underwear anyway.

Marblessolveeverything · 07/07/2024 13:53

Boypants was a description of underwear back in the late 90s, you really are over thinking and probably have provided a great laugh for the complaints team.

Honestly what on earth were you thinking? It's a perfectly adequate description of a cut of underwear which is understood by it appears 99% of people.

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 07/07/2024 18:06

I don't particularly like it but OP you are the one who is sexualising it.

S0livagant · 07/07/2024 18:09

We all wear pants, it's just a word for underwear.

GoodVibesHere · 07/07/2024 18:10

Men wear pants too, not just boys. I don't know why you're so offended by the word pants? They are just an item of clothing.

S0livagant · 07/07/2024 18:11

Just realised this is Ireland, are pants not underwear in Ireland like in England? Is the issue that the word should be different if sold in Ireland?

No pants is perfectly acceptable by 99% of the population. I have no idea what the op thought.

the rest is us have been buying them for thirty years without getting offended 🤦‍♀️

Don't usually use the word pants for underwear here, you're right about that. Sometimes used as a word for trousers but it's a little bit old fashioned (but not as much as slacks is).

I think op is overthinking this one though.

AmelieTaylor · 07/07/2024 21:37

50 years & you've only just decided to take offence 🤣🤣

it's only you making it sexual/fettish

ForGreyKoala · 07/07/2024 22:40

If nothing else I'm sure you will have given the Dunnes Stores staff a good laugh.

You are being ridiculous. It is a style of underwear, which everyone else on this thread seems to understand. I buy underwear labelled boyshorts, or boyleg, so would hardly have an attack of the vapours if they were called boypants.

Actually, I just looked at the ones I've been buying lately, and they are called boyfit.
