Eamonn Ryan resigns they lost a lot of support in EU and local elections,

But is Roderick O'Gorman really the right person to take the helm?

It was only 12 weeks (yes a long time in politics) his referendums were roundly defeated. Referendums he would not even get out and debate in run up, referendums him and the rest of the government blatantly lied to us re the potential consequences.

www.irishtimes.com/politics/2024/06/19/candidates-for-green-party-leadership-to-declare-interest-on-wednesday/

Wonder how much longer this government can hold on, 2 party leaders have stepped down in space in 12 weeks. MM is holding on for dear life.

If Simon Harris does declare an election this year is GP hoping for the whole new leader bounce back.

The green party's days are numbered and rightly so.

DublinFemale · 19/06/2024 18:39

I hope so but party members can be fickle.

I'm wondering what childish namecalling people will come up with for the new leader, now that 'Cabbage Head' is resigningHmm

hastalav · 19/06/2024 19:02

There is doubt as to whether ROG will retain his seat. If he does, and if he becomes leader of the Greens, I think he will focus on D4 urbanites and avoid the rural debacle.

In fact I think all the sitting Green TDs will lose their seats. Then the SocDems will take over the Green void. Maybe they will coalesce with Labour and then we have another third wheel. SF is not finished yet either, but their star has fallen.

Interesting times ahead. Looking on from abroad, following closely. I am eligible to vote in the GE so will return to cast it.

Abhannmor · 20/06/2024 07:34

Sinn Féin actually gained seats in the elections. It is weird comparing the actual results to the backslapping and gloating from the Civil War Tory parties and their client media.

FFFG are the governing party now and Sinn Féin are the Opposition. I actually gave a 2nd preference to one of our local FFFG candidates in the locals. Lots of ppl vote for a person in the locals. Not happening in the GE though!

VoteNONO · 20/06/2024 11:35

Don't rule out Independent Ireland. They only formed a few months ago, won 23 seats & Ciarán Mullooly got elected as an MEP. Amazing start for them.
There's still talk Michael McDowell will run with them for the General election.
Independent Ireland is just what the country needs in order to become more centered. The Greens, Labour Social Democrats etc dragged FG, FF too far left hopefully the likes of Independent Ireland, Aontú & a strong cohort of independents can pull FGFF to the centre again. I'm watching Independent Ireland closely, their leader Michael Collins is full of common sense.

Absolutely, sF did gain in LE.

Overall the 3 governing parties lost around. 80-90 seats in LE.

Not sure re EU.

I do also feel LE are the individuals not the party.

I also think there needs to be a nationwide campaign educating people how to vote.

80000 (I think) were spoiled votes some of which are xxx to candidates.

ROG was 6th vote in last election and his portfolio covers some of the vulnerable members and of Irish society, disabilities, travellers, etc.

www.independent.ie/irish-news/politics/new-green-party-leader-to-replace-eamon-ryan-to-be-named-by-july-8-as-fast-track-contest-proposed/a481080397.html

Soc dems and Labour will team up if not amalgamate into one hoping the block the vote divide.

The I look I think too many new parties entered the race and it diluted the vote

But Independent Ireland & Independents are big winners in the election. Along with SF they improved their seats from 2019.

I'm finding independent Ireland interesting challenge and could just the catalyst for more centralist politics from FF.

Independent Ireland are planning to run as many as possible in the general elections. They had a fantastic local showing & an MEP. Even if they don't get into the coalition this time (assuming it will be another coalition) Independent Irelands voices will be very valuable in the Dáil alongside Peader Toibín etc.
Surely this will pull FGFF back to their centered roots especially with the eradication of the Greens.

theleafandnotthetree · 20/06/2024 12:22

I think if the Green Party elect Roderic O'Gorman as leader they might as well pack up and go home. He is far too much of an urban/social justice warrior type with no appeal outside of a narrow cohort and actively off-putting for many others. Not that they are coming down with brilliant alternatives. But I would certainly urge Green party members to vote for Pippa Hackett over Roderic O'Gorman if they want to stand any chance of election success and more importantly, for their agenda (which should be all of ours) to remain somewhere in the weird mix we now have.

VoteNONO · 20/06/2024 12:29

I'm hoping O Gorman is voted in as that really would be the final nail in their coffin. I can't understand why the media aren't all over the missing children.

JaneJeffer · 20/06/2024 12:31

I wish the lot of them would resign

Who will touch it RO'G is the minister for IPP, Catherine (misinformation) Martin is minister of culture and arts ?

RTE do as they are told, O'Gorman buries his hat he doesn't like.

That will be a big scandal in 10yrs or so when the culpable are long retired.

@VoteNONO

It will be another coalition of sorts don't think any party is strong enough to get majority.

Even in 2002, at height of his strength Bertie was still slightly short, by 2 seats to think it was

Would love to see Independent Ireland go in with them. It will more than likely be SF though as they'll have a lot more candidates

The pact has been made and unless the voters get out and vote, it will be another back room deal with FF and FG.

Possibly some smaller party.

If independent Ireland can build make some major gains they could potentially be part of a coalition but I would expect major concessions made by all.

Is LV running again does anyone know

OP posts:
MarieDeGournay · 20/06/2024 14:17

I googled 'missing children O'Gorman' and got pages and pages of results - it actualy said 7,420,000 results, but that was probably everything that had the word 'children' in it! There were reports from all the main media outlets, and a detailed one that was behind a paywall, but it looked like a major investigation.
So it looks like the media is covering it, including the underreporting of the scale of the problem.

Migrant children - mostly older teenagers - going missing is a huge issue in the UK too, as reported in the Guardian
More than 220 unaccompanied asylum-seeking children are missing from hotels funded by the Home Office, prompting claims that the chaos-stricken government department is presiding over a “catastrophic child protection failure”.
Ministers have admitted that the Home Office has no idea of the whereabouts of 222 vulnerable children it was meant to be protecting.
Asylum seekers: Home Office accused of ‘catastrophic child protection failure’ | Immigration and asylum | The Guardian

It's difficult to know how to prevent this, as they aren't being held under lock and key so there's nothing to stop them leaving their temporary accommodation, or worse still being lured away from it.

Better accommodation with plenty of staff and resources would help, but you can be sure that as soon as plans are announced for decent accommodation for asylum-seeking children somewhere, odds are there'll be a 'welcoming committee' heading down to the local garage to fill up their petrol cans.. Sad

Apparently not but rumour has it he is up for a position in Brussels

deeahgwitch · 20/06/2024 15:37

I'd prefer Pippa Hackett to get it.
I don't know a whole lot about her but I'd prefer her to R O' G.

I too think LV may have a big job lined up or perhaps he is growing his family.
TBH I called it wrong on the Local Elections and the Euros so what do I know. 🙄

Mutters to myself "Regina Doherty ffs"🙄

A Brussels job is a distinct possibility, LV is always looking for opportunities for self promotion

I wonder though how well known is it in EU the sitting Taoiseach at the time leaked confidential documents to his friends .

Big red flag, he can't be trusted
