Where to buy second hand/antique diamond ring?

I'd love a diamond ring but don't have the budget to go to Fields like we used to pre-kids! I'm considering buying a second hand ring and having it polished up. But I've no idea where to look. I really just want a simple 3 stone diamond ring. When I look at antique dealers their websites don't really show what jewellery they have. Maybe I'm just going about it wrong. Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations? I'm willing to travel if needs be.

I’d look at auction. O’Reilly & John Weldon have a monthly auction. A fraction of the jewellers price

Get on O'Reillys auction catalogue mailing list and you can also see the rings in person at the auction house over a number of days.

Also Weldons have a catalogue email for their auctions and again you can view the items a few days before the auction.

I think John Brereton on Grafton St have good value. A nicer selection than Fields
There are Brereton shops on Capel Street and O'Connell Street too.

Depending where you are there's a brilliant place in Clevedon called Beach Antiques near the pier.

Thanks all ☺️

Go to a jewellery shop

StickyStones · 02/05/2024 18:49

I've bought from uk auctions and also eu ones (de Ruiyter) Try saleroom.com

If you're outside of Dublin, Matthew’s in Meath are worth a look. Whytes are another Dublin auction house but their pieces tend to be quite high end. Weldon's would be on the lower quality side of things imo.

Here are the realised prices at the latest O'Reilly's auction

Try Lorimat in Kilkenny. Rita is lovely and will help you find what you’re looking for!

If you want to browse rather than look at auctions there are a lot of antique jewellery shops upstairs in the Powerscourt Townhouse.

LadyEloise1 · 03/05/2024 14:27

Matthew Weldon has a shop in the Powerscourt Centre, Dublin.
He's on Insta.

Oh my goodness I used to live in Clevedon and bought a lovely Amethyst (I think) and diamond ring from there for my 22st many many moons ago.

I think it's best to go to a long-established family jeweller. Over the years I've bought and sold a few things that way.

For anyone in London, I go to Stains next to Victoria Station.

Etsy and eBay fab

caringcarer · 24/07/2024 18:16

I've bought lots of Lovely gold and diamond rings on eBay. If you use an online shop you might get a certificate too.

You could try Gales Gems on Facebook. It is a closed group but request to join and see her stock.

Vintage and Antique fair in the Royal Marine hotel in Dun Laoghaire every few weeks. Some really nice gorgeous bits

NiggleNoggle · 24/08/2024 09:30

I bought an antique three stone ring for around 700 on eBay and it was valued at 3.5K afterwards so worth looking there.

If you are anywhere near Sussex Denhams auctions usually have a good selection of jewelry and the lanes in Brighton have a lot of shops for second hand and antique rings.

LadyEloise1 · 14/12/2024 07:28

@riholtmiker
I looked up karaters and they appear to be selling lab grown diamonds.

curious79 · 14/12/2024 07:32

Auction - jewellery shops will buy them at auction then double the price

I agree.

I’m in the UK and have bought a beautiful ring online from a woman called Carole Franks.
