Washing machine - Best / Worst

When I got my washing machine I told the plumber the previous one had lasted 11 years . ' Well this one won't ' he predicted. I got it BC - before Covid but not that long before and its just gone kerblooey so he was right.

It was a Nordmende and the previous one was Indesit fwiw. I'm getting conflicting advice now. One friends advising me to just get the cheapest one as they all blow up after 5 years.
Another suggests Bosch , very expensive but pays for itself ? Any experiences and advice appreciated.

Ps I put this in Craicnet as I'm not sure we'd have the same models as the UK exactly

Im on my third Bosch in over thirty years.

Wow that's pretty damn good in fairness. I suppose if you got 10 years it might be worth the expense.

I have a Zanussi Jet System 1200 for a good few years, cannot remember exactly how long. I do a lot of laundry probably more than average and when it comes to replacing it I'll probably get another Zanussi or Bosch.

Abhannmor · 23/04/2024 15:24

Thanks for the replies. I am tempted to go Bosch or Zanussi tbh. Although the plumber might resuscitate the Nordmende....I doubt it

I love my Samsung!

Marylou62 · 23/04/2024 15:44

Having a new Hotpoint installed tomorrow.. I hope it lasts as long as the previous one which was bought in 2008!...

Motnight · 23/04/2024 15:44

Not Bosch.

Old Bosch washing machines were great. New Bosch ones are rubbish. So rubbish even Bosch agreed with me and I got 3 free replacements (each one as rubbish as the previous) in 5 years.

Abhannmor · 23/04/2024 15:53

Eeek ! That's the problem as I understand it - I've heard it doesn't matter what they're called now. They are made by 3 or 4 giant companies mainly in China?

Miele. Expensive but fabulous.

IhateMondaymornings · 23/04/2024 19:10

I was advised by a washing machine repair chap to buy Bosch, which I did. It's noisy and half the time I can't turn the on button on let alone the kids so it hasn't helped me in my quest to get them to help out. So it's no to Bosch from me.

Theoldcuriosityshop · 23/04/2024 19:39

My latest Indesit is 12 years old, it's my second one and the first lasted as long as well.

DramaAlpaca · 23/04/2024 19:49

I've recently bought an LG to replace my (at least) 15 year old Siemens. I'm very pleased with it. It's very quiet even when spinning and plays a happy little tune at the end of the cycle Smile

TheRulerofThings · 24/04/2024 07:11

Would you consider Siemens? My Siemens washing machine is eight years old and still going strong. My Siemens tumble dryer is almost thirteen years old.

Abhannmor · 24/04/2024 07:46

Thanks again everyone! If I can't revive this yoke I have plenty of options now ☺

Miele, bit over 15 years ago. Replaced a banjaxed Miele from around 1975. Someone said that recent Miele may not last so long. Hope they are wrong.

UtopiaPlanitia · 05/05/2024 16:29

I went through two Beko machines in 6 years and then I bit the bullet and bought a Miele - I love it.

Living in NI means every appliance manufacturer has a different way of delivering after-sales service: some manufacturers make us use their ROI franchise and some their GB franchise. And for NI they all seem to contract their service out so it’s rare to get a service engineer from the actual manufacturer.

So far dealing with Miele Ireland to buy various accessories has been okay - they respond more promptly via phone rather than via email. They don’t have the facility to let NI customers register or buy through their Miele.ie site and despite me enquiring about it they don’t seem to have plans to change that.

I haven’t had to arrange an engineer service in over 3 years. And, unlike my Beko machines, my Miele hasn’t given me any problems - I follow the instructions in the manual: I clean out the dispenser, dispenser compartment and door seal every few weeks and the machine does a great job. It washes everything really well and is quieter than my old machines.

It’s also possible to customise the existing programmes and machine operation via basic editing of the 'operating software' - I followed the instructions in the manual and set things up the way I prefer.

Go for something £250/300 mark
at the end of the day they get some hammer works out £100 a year for something you use everyday good value for money if you get 3 or 4 years out of it

of course things lasted longer years ago the build quality was better but that was reflected in price
I think I paid £350 for my first one 25 years ago nearly a months wages new one cost the equivalent of a weeks wages

Abhannmor · 06/05/2024 08:32

Thanks for the lovely helpful replies. I'm using the laundry at the local garage for now. Can't get a plumber til next week. Seems to be Nordmende, Candy and Beko in the local hardware stores. Probably only 2 washes a week now the kids have gone.

My Miele hasn't missed a beat in seven years. Expensive, but worth it!

C8H10N4O2 · 06/05/2024 08:53

I'm not in Ireland but after a second expensive German make died on me prematurely the man who came out said he recommended families to go for mid range, simpler machines and expect them to last 3-5 years of hard family labour!

He covered most makes and at that time all the makes were moving to cheap plastic parts made off shore and shipped in so the difference was largely in branding. As far as I can tell this is still largely the case but with more electronics which are not replaceable after five years.

Now I also need a new machine as my last machine (a John Lewis rebadge) has died so also interested in experiences of the current generation.

I'm on my second Miele, first lasted 12 years which I believe is not v good for the make. The one I have now came with only a two year guarantee, not five, and a repair man I know says although they're not made to the same standard now, they're probably the best.

whoami24601 · 06/05/2024 09:10

We've got a candy which is excellent but the best bit for us is that I pay ~£5 a month for their cover and if it ever goes wrong we just ring them up and they fix it for free. If they can't fix it they replace with a new one. Can't recommend it enough!

WithIcePlease · 06/05/2024 09:13

My Siemens is 13 years old. No problems at all. Even the plastic fascia has not discoloured and it's opposite a glass outside door.

SleepingisanArt · 06/05/2024 09:20

My Miele is 19. The Miele engineer who came to replace the brushes in my tumble dryer (they do wear out over time and the dryer is also 19) said to buy the more basic versions of the washing machines as the ones you can control with apps on your phone have more that can go wrong. That technology isn't as robust as the Miele mechanical engineering

LadyEloise1 · 06/05/2024 09:23

My Bosch died after 22 years.
I got a Miele ( I had always wanted one ).
So far so good 🤞
