Don’t really get the lack of teachers thing

I’m a secondary school teacher (qualified in Ireland ) but lived abroad for years . I’ve just read another article about how there is such a lack of teachers particularly in secondary (tbh it wouldn’t surprise me that less young people are doing hdips now)
I’ve just looked up “education posts.ie and my county. There are zero post primary jobs , absolutely none and around 2 primary school jobs (there’s around 6 primary schools in my immediate area. I’m in a big county but not Dublin. Is it just Dublin that has a shortage? I’ve ended up in a different job but would have loved to have returned to teaching but honestly don’t get at all how jobs are actually advertised. I obviously got used to working abroad and doing everything online and I wasn’t prefer the professionalism in that. I just don’t get how it works here and I have done subbing but needed something more secure. The school told me they couldn’t get subs even though i had never seen them alert on education posts and I signed up to a subbing section they had on their school website (it clearly isn’t used though). I’m happy in my job but just find this bizarre when o read how there’s such a shortage in the news but absolutely nothing is advertised.

Adverts are expensive sometimes 3k and it's a lot to pay when you get no candidates
We have advertised 3 times and got no one turn up or low quality candidates apply
We use word of mouth or social media
We need a maths teacher and food tech teacher in ilford if there are any out there please do me a!

Try ringing round local schools?

For subbing most of the on-line options are pretty rubbish so schools rely on local networks and word of mouth. If you're available, email schools with your CV and teaching council number.

As another poster said, ads cost and you'll possibly see an upswing in advance of the new year. But if you're interested in teaching, email the schools you'd be willing to travel to.

Come to South Yorkshire! My daughter's school has no maths, science or French secondary teachers! Been using a raft of subs since September. My daughter is unlikely to pass these subjects sadly.
