Weirdest song you've heard played at a funeral

What is the oddest song you've heard played at a funeral?

We had a family funeral and no-one knew what the deceased liked musically as they died at a great vintage...so as the curtains closed...the Enmerdale theme tune was played 👀 Apparently she enjoyed watching it.
Cannot now hear the credits without smiling.

My Nan wanted I've had the time of my life from dirty dancing so that's what she had along with come on Eileen because her name was Eileen

A dear friend went out to Kasabien’s Fire. I don’t know the song or the artist but had a wee smile as it was the sort of thing my friend would have approved of.
Fast forward ten or so years and a friend invites me to gig as the other person they’d been going with had dropped out, it was Kasabien and I reckon I was the only person in that gig bawling my eyes out to Fire.

@Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies just had to google the Knights song as it rang a bell and you've taken me back 50 years to primary school ! 😁

I arranged for The Gas Man Cometh by Flanders & Swann - you might know this, the chorus goes 'They all make work for the working man to do...' - for Mum's funeral, I think she liked it, it summed up the stress of dealing with all the public bodies and healthcare types, it lightened the mood. Not her playout music, though.

At risk of bringing the party down, I would say that while these suggestions sound like fun, for some any kind of levity or 'humorous' thing might not chime on the day unless the deceased specifically requested it. Likewise, a notably sad song might not work given that you may be trying not to cry on the day, for fear of having a massive breakdown in front of relatives you maybe only see once every few years.

Finally, the song you choose may well be forever associated in your mind with possibly the worst day of your life, so maybe don't choose one that you have always liked and would like to play again to remind you of your relative, esp if it is always popping up on the radio and may catch you unawares. You may find it a bit tainted by the memory of the day.

Saturday Night by Whigfield. My cousin died when she was in her 30s and it was her favourite song from the days when we were young and carefree. It was played graveside, which did surprise me if I'm honest. But I smile when I think back to that moment, she'd have found it hilarious.

‘Nelly The Elephant’ !
Not a funeral I was at, but the one before at the crematorium!

Z cars, Everton FC theme song. In a Catholic church for my dad. Life long fan

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 23/03/2024 18:25

We departed the church at my Uncle's funeral to the Back to the Future theme tune. He bloody loved those films.

gingergran · 23/03/2024 18:36

Great balls of fire at a cremation

ScoopyDoo · 23/03/2024 18:38

Monkey man by the specials. We all danced out singing ay-ay-ay. It was fabulous. He died young, so good to celebrate his zest.
At my friend’s dad’s he had My Sweet Lord and again we all sang. ‘Really wanna see you, really wanna be with you.’ Not joyous exactly but lovely, esp for a liverpudlian. Never forgot it after 30 years.

onwardandupwards · 23/03/2024 18:49

My auntie had the conga song!

annonymousse · 23/03/2024 19:17

My dad chose his funeral music. He was carried out to the 1812 overture and was very insistent it had to have the cannons. We asked that it be played as loudly as possible. Dad would play it so loud we could feel the walls of his study vibrating. It was a giggly/tearful moment.

dottydodah · 23/03/2024 20:07

MIL (who loved Dancing) chose Lord Of the Dance .The Vicar said it was the first time he had ever played it.It seemed fitting though

Mammyloveswine · 23/03/2024 20:09

VaddaABeetch · 23/03/2024 20:14

There will always be a you Donna Summer as the coffin was carried out. My friends brother. He was a huge personality

George Michael turned a different corner, A friend who ended his life whose brother did the mass. All traditional until the end

HoneyButterPopcorn · 23/03/2024 20:19

Not a funeral song but we had a load of cinema tickets booked (yes it’s relevant) for a couple of film seasons. About 8 in all.

My (young) niece sadly passed away and her funeral was the day before the first film (which we went to).

She was cremated and bugger me, Lloyds bank are a sponsor, and before the film they had the ad of the horses running to the song ‘this girl is on fire’.

Of course I bawled my eyes out. Every film we saw has this advert played in the trailers and I cry every time as it’s just become associated with her.

mrssquidink · 23/03/2024 20:25

For my mum’s funeral we had Agadoo by Black Lace. She made sure it was played at every party she was at (yes, including my wedding reception 😂) so we thought it only fair to have it at the last party she was at.

iliveinhappyvalley · 23/03/2024 20:28

My mums favourite song was Wham, Wake me up before you go go. The look of shock on people's faces at the fist 'Jitterbug' was hilarious and mum would have loved it.

MaxandMeg · 23/03/2024 20:31

I went to one last year where the committal was Billy Connelly's 'Crematorium Song.'

TeenLifeMum · 23/03/2024 20:31

My granny’s funeral we had bring my sunshine - it was perfect.

dh’s nan loved Disney and had can you feel the love tonight from the lion king. It was supposed to be the Elton John version but they played the film version with Timone and Pumba - dfil is still furious 15 years on but dh and I were crying laughing. Honestly, she would have preferred that version.

TeenLifeMum · 23/03/2024 20:34

Oh and my cousin died age 16 and she loved Peter Andre so they played mysterious girl as we left. I still have mixed emotions about the song.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 23/03/2024 20:34

HappiestSleeping · 23/03/2024 20:36
