What has happened to that poor little boy down in Waterford? A woman in her late 30s has been arrested so it sounds like she's the mother.

It's just so sad.

This is local to me, it's just so awfully tragic. He died by drowning, may he RIP.

Oh god the poor little guy. So it might have been an accident? Probably not if they have arrested the woman.

You shouldn’t speculate on what happened. It’s a terrible tragedy and no doubt details will emerge later.

Poor little boy, it’s so sad.

The woman in her thirties was known to the boy.

That's not what is being reported this morning. This is from the Indo: "Gardaí investigating the death of six-year-old Matthew Purcell-Healy in Co Waterford have said they are satisfied he did not drown.
Following the inconclusive results of a preliminary post-mortem examination, they are now trying to determine if he died by suffocation in the car in which he was found unresponsive at Rathmoylan Cove, close to Dunmore East."

It is unbelievably sad. That poor child.

I saw that this morning but drowning was reported yesterday.

The whole community is shocked, the family are well known locally. I saw the gardai at the house on Friday and didn't make the connection then as the name wasn't released at that stage.

Well, his mother has now been charged with murder, rather than manslaughter...?

pontipinemum · 14/02/2024 14:42

@TemplesofDelight I heard that on the news dropping my child to creche. It made me cry, sorry if that sounds dramatic, I am pregnant and emotional. But it is so so sad. That poor little boy,

I've left my sympathies on RIP, it is so wrong. His poor father, grandparents, family, his little friends.

I do not understand the 'mother' she is not a mother is any important sense of the word. I hope they throw away the key.

I disagree @pontipinemum That woman gave birth to her son. She was distraught at his death. He was her child. She was her mother. And yes she failed him in the most catastrophic of ways. Something broke down and we don't know any of the details in between his birth and death. There has been reporting of the possibility of an event or decision that was expected and was potentially connected to what happened. But we don't have any idea what that was. She was still his mother. Trying to dismiss her as "not a mother in any important sense of the word" may be a protective mechanism that other mothers might resort to to try and put as much distance as possible between her and us. I get how horrific and incomprehensible her actions were. But as I see it, it in no way helps to understand what happened and therefore doesn't help us understand what needs to happen to minimise the chances of similar happening again. My thoughts are with everyone in any way touched by this. That poor child. What a horrific waste of a young life.

LadyEloise1 · 15/02/2024 08:54

Utterly heartbreaking for all.
He was such a handsome wee boy.
My heart goes out too to parents of his young relatives, friends and classmates having to explain his death to them.

champagneblanc · 15/02/2024 10:25

This is so tragic, what a beautiful little boy, only 6 years of age. The newspaper reports of the evening he was found are particularly harrowing. 😢

honeyrider · 15/02/2024 10:46

Seeing his white coffin then hearing his Dad was heartbreaking.

Totally agree with everything you have said. It’s such a tragedy.

I often think that there’s a fine line between sane and insanity. I also think that a lot of murder/manslaughter cases use the term mental breakdown as a Get Out of Jail Card but whilst not excusing what the mother did, nobody knows what went on and what caused her to do what she did.

No matter what happens to her she will have to live with this for the rest of her life.
