Afternoon all. I'll keep this brief as it is sooooo tedious, but in short, moving home after 15 years in UK and staying with parents until I get set up.

How do I go about getting proof of address so that I can set up bank account, phone contract etc?

It feels like a special circle of hell where I need a bank statement etc as proof of address but can't get a bank statement without setting up bank account and can't set up bank account without proof of address!!!!

I’ve been able to use a GP letter and my driving license in the past but yes, it’s a massive PITA!

MrsPositivity1 · 14/01/2024 16:29

What country have you moved to?

allmycats · 14/01/2024 16:35

Can you open a basic account with a credit union and ask for a statement to be sent out. Did this a few years ago when I moved to Ireland.

@MaloneMeadow thank you! Actually you're right, I should be able to register with gp as I have a PPS number, but partner is from Uk so needs to apply for PPS number first. It's a good start though! Driving licences are both UK, and you need , you've guessed it, proof of address to swap them!

@allmycats that is a great shout, will they let you do that without proof of address? Although some places will accept a bill from the occupants of the house where you live, with a note written on it saying you live there. Credit union feels like a place that might accept that!

Could you change your address on your UK bank account to your Irish Address then download a statement?

BliainNua · 14/01/2024 20:30

Not sure if this will help, but when my 18yr old DC wanted to set up his own bank account (& obviously had nothing in his own name at our address) the bank sent a letter to him which he could then use as proof of address. It was AIB. Hope this helps.

Ballygowenwater · 16/01/2024 13:17

When I moved back I was able to use my parents electricity bill with a note signed by my mam saying i lived there written on it. It was a bit embarrassing as a 30 year old having a note from my mam but it was enough to get me a Public Services card which I could then use as proof of address.

@MrsPositivity1 yes I need to look into the, and whether my uk bank will allow me to retain my bank account for a while once I move out of the uk

@BliainNua oh that's good to know, they might be willing to do that

@Ballygowenwater I am laughing at the idea of having a note from my parents at thirty odd 😂 but it is written on the government website as an acceptable form of proof of address for pps number so maybe banks would too. They also might be able to see that I used to have an account with them with my parents' address so that might help.

Thank you everyone, some good options to explore anyway. Really looking forward to all of the nightmare admin we will have to sort out!!!!
