The homeless woman in Limerick

Was anyone reading the news article about the homeless woman in Limerick. She is sleeping with her toddler son in a tent in Limerick city. I think it's getting a lot of coverage because she is a young woman with a toddler son.
I just felt so sad when I read it, it's so cold out there.

It is so sad. I find it so odd that they can’t just start figuring out properties that can be adapted to be hostels or homes, we’ve a few unused hse properties near us

I didn't see that, where is it? Sounds awful.

Almondsupreme · 06/12/2023 16:36

And the lady in Cork who's living in an abandoned (un-renovated) cow shed

It's a disgrace

pontipinemum · 06/12/2023 17:33

@Mooshamoo I don't want to be 'that person' but I'm going to be. On other less PC site I have read a bit about her. By what they are saying she and her partner have been offered things they just don't want what they have been offered.

If that's true or not IDK

Maybe she has been offered things but it's shite and this is her way of making a stand. It will certainly get her seen to

There is obviously more to this story than printed.

ticketstickets · 06/12/2023 18:18

It sounds like she is not the easiest person if she was barred from homeless accomodation.

Her poor son.

Chickenkeev · 06/12/2023 18:27

While she seems dodge AF, her son should be suffering for it.

Chickenkeev · 06/12/2023 18:28

Should not be suffering for it! Jaysus wept.

Dublincailin · 06/12/2023 18:31

I agree but homeless services have a responsibility to all the people in the shelter.

There is a lot more to this story than what was printed and the version printed will go unchallenged as councils cannot comment on individual cases.

Dublincailin · 06/12/2023 18:31

There is huge holes in this story

SparkyBlue · 06/12/2023 18:32

A lot more to that story

TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/12/2023 18:35

Yeah, she is clearly at it. I don't know what the solution is but people need to be able to say "bullshit" in these cases, if only to stop people dragging their children to live in a tent until someone gives them their preferred property.

I think this is exactly the type of shit stirring that is being aimed for with the new reporting of this woman, particularly after what happened in Dublin a few weeks ago - which is frustrating
There is clearly a backstory, and rumours that she has been offered accommodation and has refused/ been kicked out of - but some people will twist it to 'an Irish person out on the streets while all these foreign people get houses' etc. etc.

Mammyloveswine · 06/12/2023 18:43

Does her son not go to school? He needs to be taken into care as there is clearly a lot of history here!!!

I have very little sympathy for her as it sounds as though she has received support in the past.

Dublincailin · 06/12/2023 18:44

Reading between the lines it comes across as she caused issues in homeless accommodation resulting in her been evicted.

There is the possibility that she was offered something but refused as it's not what she wanted.

This is a partial story

lesdeluges · 06/12/2023 19:31

Reminds me a bit of the woman who brought her 6 kids to the Garda station and camped there. The council got her the house she wanted with room for a trampoline as demanded requested.

alwaysbreaks · 06/12/2023 19:37

I call bullshit on this story. Her poor child!! Social services need to step in and take this poor boy away from her.

Mooshamoo · 06/12/2023 20:05

@pontipinemum you said shes been offered things and refused it. I can't believe that. Why would anyone choose to sleep in a tent in these freezing conditions. It's freezing. I'd say its life threatenting to sleep in a tent in these conditions right now.

It's interesting because I was in Dublin last week and I saw a lot of homeleas people in tents. I said it to my friend and he said - oh I heard those people had been offered help and they refused.

Who's saying that?
I think thats bullshit. That they were all offered help and they refused. I talked to one homeless person once, she said they wouldn't give her any help

Well there are hundreds of empty vacant properties around Limerick, owned by elderly people involved in the Fair Deal Scheme. There might be thousands of them, just sitting there and nobody is doing anything about it. All tied up and nobody using them.

There is also hundreds of properties being used for businesses that are family homes. The entire street beside the Regional Hospital, all Physio’s, chiropodists, nurseries, all using 3 bedrooms family homes for their businesses.
Most of O Connell Avenue, is consultants rooms. These are all family homes being used for businesses.
(Im not talking about people with hairdressing salons in their home/garage or similar, I mean entire family homes are being used for businesses during the day and are vacant all night after 5pm.)

It’s scandalous.

Regarding this woman and toddler, is very cold in Limerick tonight, God help that little child.

ChanelNo19EDT · 06/12/2023 22:15

Wow, I cannot believe my comment was deleted. I said a lot of people don't believe her and that ON THE FACE OF IT it was confusing that every hotel is full of immigrants and an irish woman is in a tent. I'm not wrong for asking if this is the issue. Some very unintelligent moderation there deleting my post. It is the feeling of being censored and avoiding the issues which lead to the riots. There was a sense that the media were not allowed to 'go there' and now I can't even comment that on the face of it, in this climate, it does leave a question in the air.

ChanelNo19EDT · 06/12/2023 22:15

I didn't even say I did not believe her. I said I did not know what to think.

Edited

wow ironic when it was largely the sense that the media was not allowed to report some facts that lead to the rioting, or even ask the questions.

ChanelNo19EDT · 06/12/2023 22:24

And she may be exploiting that narrative, but what sort of police state are we living in now that we cannot even ASK the questions, is this what it looks like, this is mumsnet but lets hope the gardai aren't coming in to our houses a month from now, demanding our passwords.

If you can't solve the problems, silence the people who ask about the problems.

HiGunny · 06/12/2023 22:26

I saw this story and felt there was a lot more to it than reported. Plus, I would do anything to not have my 5 year old sleeping in a tent in freezing temperatures. Surely there was someone her son could have stayed with instead of having him in a tent??
