One of my family members in her 20s struggles with addiction to alcohol (resorted to buying ethanol sanitizer) and codeine. She would like to choose between Smarmore or the Rutland Centre and stay there for a month. She has VHI health insurance.

Hi, @oganesson I haven't been to either of those. Haven't heard of Smarmore either. I went to Cuan Mhuire, and St Pats. Cuan Mhuire first because a family member practically rammed me in the door, even though I had to say I wanted to go. I had and have VHI but didn't know about the others.

St Pats was a bit shit because it was the middle of covid, but did also help in what I did get.

I'll just say that if she is the 'force' behind wanting to go that is a fantastic start. I didn't want to go but I am glad I was forced/ helped whatever you want to say.

It isn't a 1 stop wonder and many many people (in my experience) relapse but if they're lucky they learn from it and it does vastly improve their lives. I haven't had a 'slip' in about 6 months now. Previously unheard for me. And I have been sober more than I have been drinking in the last 4 years which is also nice

I have indirect experience with Smarmore and the feedback I’ve gotten is amazingly positive. Their aftercare is excellent too.

Forgot to say I have met people through AA that have been to the ruthland. One lad says it was the best things in his life, another hated it. I have learnt with the two I have been to it really is what you put into it.

A relative did 12 week rehab in Cuan Mhuire in Newry. They have excellent aftercare.

I was coming on to say Cuan Mhuire.

I've had indirect experience with both the Rutland and Smarmore (indirect being that I was a Concerned Person rather than an addict)
I would avoid Smarmore like the plague. It hasn't got a good reputation either amongst several addiction counsellors I subsequently spoke to.

The Rutland's programme is better, and i have alot of time for the staff and approach there, but I honestly found from talking to other CPs that the centre with the best rate of success was Cuan Muire.
However, I have noticed that they have to hit utter rock bottom before they agree to go there.
I think maybe if am addict is not too entrenched in their addiction that the Rutland would be beneficial.
All my own opinion obviously!
Best of luck. If you're supporting your loved one and have been affected by their addiction I found the CP groups in the Rutland invaluable for that.
