Hello. I am looking for some advice re equivalent school year from UK to ROI please?

Would a child turning 12 in October 2024 be starting post primary in September 24 or would it be the following year?

Also - what year would a UK year 2 (turning 7 this October) be in please?

Thanks!

So there is quite a bit of leeway in Ireland regarding when children start school. However with October birthdays they would be starting primary school in the year they turn 5. It’s mostly spring/summer birthdays that people debate when to send them.

A child turning 12 in October would realistically be in 6th class and would start secondary school in the year when they turn 13 so a September 2025 start.

The child turning 7 this October would be in 1st class.

The previous poster had it spot on. My DD turns 12 in 2024 just before Christmas and she will be in her last year of primary school so will head to secondary school in September 25. A child turning 7 in October would more than likely have started school the September before their fifth birthday (although not unheard nowadays for them to be almost six) so generally they would be in first class
