Are there any bakeries in Dublin that do proper bagels?

When we lived in London we used to occasionally go to Brick Lane and buy a load of bagels, split them and freeze them. They were delicious. Now that we're in Dublin I have a bit of a craving for the same type. The supermarket bagels are basically just bread rolls and don't have the correct texture and 'chew'.

Is there anywhere (pref Dublin) that does traditional bagels so that I could buy a job lot and have them in the freezer for when the munchies hits?

If you find any, let the rest of us know!

Have you tried the Bretzel Bakery @BlackAmericanoNoSugar ?

It is in a formerly Jewish area of the city, at Lennox Street in Portobello, Dublin 8. It was set up by a Russian Jewish immigrant.
The Jewish population have moved out but the bakery remains.

Yup Bretzel bagels are v good.

Also try deadly bagel -- www.deadlybagel.com/

Have only had them filled but seemed to have a good chewiness!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 15/08/2023 19:42

Thanks, I will check both of those out.

According to Google Deadly Bagel closed last year, did they reopen again?

The good news about Bretzel is that they sell through other shops, so Supervalue, Donnybrook Fair and Fresh are all reasonably convenient for me.

Bretzel bakery goods are sold in SuperValu

3timeslucky · 16/08/2023 17:09

I find Bretzel bagels very much in the bread roll category (though that wasn't the case 30 years ago). I find the best are ITSA bagels.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 16/08/2023 18:16

Do ITSA sell just bagels, it looks from the info online as though they are a sandwich/cafe type place rather than a bakery?

McDonald'sWine

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 16/08/2023 19:30

McDonald's bagels aren't right, they're not as bad as the supermarket ones but they're not right. Anyway, they're not a bakery, they won't sell me a bag of 20 bagels for me to freeze and use later.

My local butcher has them but I used to get them from their bagel bar in Dun Laoghaire. Might be worth contacting them to ask what retail outlets they have.

I was visiting my aunt in Churchtown and popped in to SuperValue -it has a nice bakery section and they do Bretzel products. I'm not sure if they had bagels though, sorry.
So if you're near Churchtown you could give them a call to check.

@ImGoingThroughChanges Have you ordered online from them? They say to put a note in the PayPal section to specify what type, but I don't have a note section when I go to pay, just a 'purchase now' button.

https://www.galwaybaybakery.ie/

these will deliver to dublin and blow your mind

I was just going to recommend these. They are amazing.

Pizza bagel, jalapeno and cheese, cranberry and rosemary, and garlic bagel are my favourites but they are all fab.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 20/08/2023 11:46

How do you specify @OchonAgusOchonOh ? I have the PayPal screen up but no note section, should I send an email following the order?

I'm sorry but I've never bought online. I get them in the market in galway.

Are you using the paypal app or desktop version? I have a notion that there is an option for the note on the desktop.

I'd send them an email to check. I'd say you could specify what you want via email and pay with PayPal.

3timeslucky · 20/08/2023 17:27

I had the same issue and have ordered and emailed separately. Hopefully it'll work as ITSA stopped doing Cinnamon & Raisin and these could scratch that itch nicely.

KittytheHare · 21/08/2023 14:14

I ordered these yesterday on the strength of this thread. I had the same issue and emailed them separately, they replied almost immediately. Really excited to try these

Deli 613 in Rathmines apparently has good frozen bagels that come from NY. I haven't tried them but saw a Jewish American lady online recommend them, she's moved to Ireland and was missing good bagels.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 02/09/2023 18:46

I got the Galway Bay bagels, and they are pretty good. I bought two packs of plain for the DC, and one each of cranberry and rosemary, seeded, wholemeal and cheese and jalapeño. The cheese and jalapeño are delicious and the wholemeal have an amazing texture. I'm less keen on the seeded, mostly because the poppy seeds get EVERYWHERE, in the toaster, all over the counter, in my teeth, in the butter. I had a seeded bagel on Thursday and I'm still finding poppy seeds, it's like the food version of glitter or christmas tree needles. I haven't tried the cranberry and rosemary, but DH was underwhelmed as he thought the rosemary was a bit too dominant. DD tried the plain but prefers the supermarket version, she likes the Brennans bagels best which IMO are the most like bread rolls of all the supermarket versions so it's possible that she just doesn't really like bagels. DS shovels food down so fast that he barely tastes it, so no real opinion from him.
