Very Irish Things

A thread of appreciation of things that only seem to happen in Ireland.

I was away for two weeks and a couple of days after I returned the postman knocked on my door with a big bag of packages ( they were sent from work, only two were very delayed orders). He realised I was away so instead of leaving them and risking theft or damage he stored them for me.

Anyone else any good stories?

You looder - thanks to Killinaskully for reminding me of a lot of expressions :)

That sounds fabulous, but none of the schools where I am have anything like that unfortunately. It's either just jumpers or blazers. Is it widespread do you know? Maybe Dublin schools?

Pretty widespread, though there is an occasional school without any uniform. Even the private schools have mostly moved away from blazer to school jacket, or they will have a jacket in addition to blazer.

Are these jackets available for purchase by general public? If so are they nice to look at? Dd starting secondary school and will have half a mile to walk/cycle to bus stop, sounds like these would be great for her. I'll probably take her bag out and drop it off in neighbours shed if it's heavy.

Locally, they are available from the uniform shops that supply the schools in the city/county. However, they would be crested and in the particular colour of each school. This is a link to the manufacturer where it might be possible to order one, this is the type of jacket DC have. Various different jackets. The one our school specifies is a different colour and currently costs €80 from local supplier - so good value at an average of €13.33 per year to keep warm and dry.

Isn't it yoke? At least it was in our house.

Yes it is Yoke as in an ould bit of rope you might tie up a donkey or cow with and hence basically any old thing. My grown up sons use it for an attractive young woman. But I don't know if that's a new development. Yoke meaning an ecstasy tablet certainly is!

Neverinamonthofsundays · 27/07/2023 05:34

Sinead O Connor rest her soul. The epitome of Irish.

Them school coats sound fab. Mine are all in ET schools sadly.

RocketPanda · 27/07/2023 09:37

I can confirm that the school jacket has made it to the west, in my DC school anyway. There will be nuclear war and all the childer wearing the indestructible jacket will be the only ones left.

My father used to say gobaloon.

Someone could say to you grab the yoke for that thing, it's in the press and you would know exactly what they are talking about.

Thingamajig

Bad juju usually used in reference to cars or houses. If a car had bad juju you sold it on. Its just a feeling, nothing credible.

I do agree that Irish people look death in the eye. When I lived in England my mother died and everyone avoided me. It was an awful time made worse by people's fear of death. I was expected to grieve silently and behind the scenes.

Love the jacket for secondary school too.

Also love the word yoke but cannot decide if I prefer thingamajig.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 27/07/2023 09:48

Seconding Sinéad O'Connor as the epitome of Irish.

May she rest in peace.

girlswillbegirls · 27/07/2023 09:54

I agree too. I am not Irish and first time I heard about Ireland was back in the early 1990s. Sinéad O Connor with her irreverence and unique style made national news in my country ripping that photograph.

May she rest in peace.

Chickenkeev · 27/07/2023 09:58

I was awake all night looking at interviews and performances. She was so talented, so strong but fragile with it. Full of the strength of her convictions. It's very hard to believe she's gone.

This. She really and truly was. Rest in peace and power Sinéad. Coladh Sámh.💔

Thanks @SageRosemary I appreciate the effort you went to for me

Taytocrisps · 27/07/2023 20:58

@FuzzyCaoraDhubh your school trip story reminds me of the time we went on a school tour to Drogheda (why Drogheda?) and our teacher brought us into the church there to see the blackened head of St. Oliver Plunkett. Just to emphasize, we were primary school kids!

Another year we went to Kilkenny and visited St. Canice's Cathedral. But at least we got to do the caves as well.

Young people today have no idea how good they have it with their Tayto Park trips Grin.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 27/07/2023 21:26

There would be uproar @Taytocrisps! Could you imagine it?! One of my kids in secondary school had a school tour (pre Covid) to Co. Waterford to see the grave of Blessed Edmund Rice and then bowling. She wasn't impressed at all. Good to see that the semi-religious school tour is still a thing though ;)

Oh god I remember going to see the head too, really freaked me out!
Also went to the coca cola factory in Drogheda for one school tour.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 27/07/2023 22:00

There will be nightmares tonight 😅

Orders76 · 27/07/2023 22:20

Ahhh the head, very scary. But Drogheda is great, millmount and newgrange are great!

WaveyGodshawk · 27/07/2023 23:04

I think I'll have to bring my dc down to see it actually, it's fascinating now when I think of it!

Sylver75 · 28/07/2023 04:47

Stop acting the maggot
May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead
May the devil make a ladder of your spine
Go-wan-ow-dat
Erra will you ever whisht
Cop on
Are we going out or out-out?
Did you turn off the immersion?

Anyone remember when Tayto had spring onion flavour crisps? They were deadly.
Robin Hood Cola ice lollies, think Leadmore Dairies made them, always had them at the cinema.
The Faerie Queen butter was a thing in North County Cork in 80s.

Neverinamonthofsundays · 28/07/2023 09:59

We brought the kids to see Oliver Plunketts head recently. We gave them the option of where to go and that is where they wanted. It is morbidly fascinating really.

Love the Coca cola tours - 'Give that girl a can of coke' whenever you answered something correctly.

@Neverinamonthofsundays I'd forgotten all about that 🤣

newfloorplease · 28/07/2023 17:00

Having a female Justice Minister tell you that she does not feel uneasy walking around O' Connell Street at any time of the day or night.
Yeah right!
I wouldn't feel threatened either if I had two Gardai minding me.

doodles55 · 28/07/2023 19:25

That’ll put manners on ye ,

3luckystars · 28/07/2023 19:26

Oh Robin Hoods!!!! I loved them!

Chickenkeev · 28/07/2023 19:28

Nationwide.
