Embarrassment of Leo

So embarrassed at Leo and partner's terrible behaviour at the coronation. The Instagram messages? Not using a hanky? I couldn't care less about the event itself but if you're going to go, at least keep a low profile. I'm disgusted with them. All this after the picture of Leo shifting someone in the George who barely looked 18. Not a Fine Gael supporter but surely they need someone representing them who knows how to behave in public.

Totally agree

FannagBeg · 15/05/2023 07:30

I've just been reading about this. So one of the 350 people in Matthew Barrett's 'private' Insta group shared the messages?

I presume that he didn't have to go if he didn't want to? It was a political & diplomatic decision for the Irish delegation to go (not sure if delegation is the right word here but hopefully ykwim), so some decorum would have been appropriate. Instead we have tawdriness.

I mean, I don't give a sod about the coronation & monarchy, I care about Ireland and how it is being governed. Leo Varadkar is starting to look like a very contemptuous man.

Orders76 · 15/05/2023 07:38

I'd like Michael Martin back, and I used to be a fan of Leo at the very start of this government. Absolutely not now.

Camillasfagwrinkles · 15/05/2023 07:41

It would have been so easy for them to go and keep their heads down. I feel they've made a show of us.

Yeah I liked Leo at the start too, but I’m losing faith in him. In all this thought, I think it’s very clear that it’s his partner who comes out worse. I’d have hoped that Leo would have told him to wise up, but then that would imply a power-imbalance in the relationship if Leo dictated how Matt behaved, and it’s quite possible that Leo did in fact tell him to wise up but Matt ignored him because he is a grown man who makes his own decisions.

Either way, it’s clear that Matt is a complete tube who should never represent the country again because he has zero class or decorum, and Leo should make wiser decisions in who he brings with him as his plus one! I’d like to see Leo publicly apologise for Matt’s behaviour but I doubt it will happen. (And even if it did, it may well not be genuine)

Meh. I've no time for Leo and co because they're a bunch of useless Tory tossers.

But I can't pretend this is a big deal. I bet Charles and Camilla had a good cackle over it tbh. Probably Matt Barratt' nerves were at him , like the Beatles smoking a spliff when they collected their MBEs.

When Spike Milligan collected his lifetime achievement award the host read out a tribute from Prince Charles. ' Grovelling little bastard ' said Spike. Charles was a fan though. Lighten up ffs - there's ppl sleeping in doorways.

Sonicgirl56 · 15/05/2023 18:56

Would Matt's comments fall under "hate speech?🤔 Utterly embarrassing for them, taxpayers money spent on that pair" representing "our country.

Sonicgirl56 · 15/05/2023 19:02

Another gaffe fromin the USA in March with the Clinton comments. This pair should no longer represent Ireland.
Leo was also pictured picking his nose at the coronation.

I have to say I agree with you.
They let us, the Irish people down, they let their families down, they let themselves down- Leo at his nose again. Didn't he learn from the last time ?

Sonicgirl56 · 15/05/2023 20:16

Especially after the Clinton comments in the US on his official state St Patrick's Day visit. Uncultured behaviour from both of them. They have let the Irish down yet again.

irishfeminist · 15/05/2023 20:47

They're a pair of ignorant classless boors. Just mortifying behaviour. Varadkar's cooing about the staircase in Downing Street being like the one in Love Actually, quoting Mean Girls for a bet during a speech to the nation in the middle of a deadly pandemic, snogging the face off some young man while appearing off his tits in a nightclub, leaking confidential info to friends for commercial gain, making off-colour jokes about Monica Lewinsky in front of the Clintons... there's no end to what an embarrassment he is.

Orders76 · 15/05/2023 23:47

Like just don't go if you're not a royalist, let Michael M or Michael D go, our minister for state. I'm not a royalist, I just would have politely passed the invite.
But to go and just be rude, all sorts of naff.

Doggydarling · 16/05/2023 00:13

I can't stand him, he's an embarrassment and his partner is as bad. The behaviour of both at the coronation was little more than I'd expect judging on the past, I really wish Leo would vanish out of politics for good but then he might have to actually go work as a doctor which I doubt he ever will. My father put it very simply years ago when Leo became the FG leader and not Simon Coveney, they chose the show horse over the work horse unfortunately.

Sonicgirl56 · 16/05/2023 05:36

Simon Coveney would have showed much more respect last weekend. Shocking behaviour especially as the first Irish representatives at a coronation.

Rishi's wife is Matt's equivalent. Couldn't imagine Mrs Sunak ever behaving like that at any event she was accompanying her prime minister husband to.

As my mother said this pair are supposed to be among Ireland's brightest & best, highly educated, huge salaries, high flying careers... Just shows money or education still can't buy a bit of cop on or class...

Mackerson · 16/05/2023 05:51

It wasn't just the insulting stuff he said, he was texting during a religious service. Leo must have seen him doing it. Why didn't he stop him? And then he defended him by saying he was a private individual. If he was a private individual, he'd never have got an invite. Let's face it, he wanted to go to the place and meet a King - he just didn't want to do it with any manners. What an embarrassment.

Sonicgirl56 · 16/05/2023 06:12

He was also taking photos in the car on the way to the service saying he was the king of England.
Leo wants to bring in these hate speech laws covering private social media accounts etc.. I guess his arguments no longer stand up if he's claiming Matt is a private individual so therefore can share what he wants🤔

That's a very interesting point. So Leo is claiming it's OK, it's really OK, to take the piss out of / insult / mock other people's political beliefs and religious rituals etc if it's done in one's capacity as a private individual using their own private social media accounts?

Very pleased to hear it.

Sonicgirl56 · 16/05/2023 07:14

Yep again twisting things to suit his own agenda!

Well some good can come of it then? We already have laws against incitement to racist hatred etc. Actual hate speech.

We do not need or want laws against having an opinion. Barratt might be an entitled langer but he broke no English law afaik. This new law should be binned forthwith . If not I might take out a test case against someone who says Cork hurling is crap.

CreationNat1on · 16/05/2023 13:07

They are a pair of pups, really disgraceful. It's disappointing that's these attention seeking clowns are in positions of influence.

CreationNat1on · 16/05/2023 13:10

They are always seeking to indulge their egos and impress some young twats on the fringes of their circle. Petty, twatty, disrespectful, cavalier and reckless.

"look at me, I m such a laugh"..... Yawn and grow up.

Annasgirl · 16/05/2023 17:25

It was so awful - I was mortified when I read it in the Irish Times on Saturday. I’m glad it’s erupted - those 2 get away with murder. He was there as a representative of our state - these 2 supposedly represent the new, progressive Ireland 🙄. Give me Enda and Fionnuala any day. Even Michelle O’Neill, who would be an ardent anti monarchist, managed to go and represent her country with respect.

I watched the service - the first bit, to see all the heads of state arrive - I didn’t see Leo. Can you imagine any other head of state picking their nose at an event like this?

I am so sick of him - Fine Gael really made a huge error in choosing him.

CreationNat1on · 16/05/2023 17:47

Many of his/their gaffs revolve around their sexuality. The "jokes" were so giddy and juvenile, it's real back of the bus stuff.

Let's also not forget about him writing to Kylie Minogue on state headed paper. Abuse of position.

Look at how he throws around homophobic accusations when he's trying to deflect when he's being grilled on his failures in the Dail.

LadyEloise1 · 16/05/2023 19:15

Am I correct in thinking the grass roots Fine Gaelers wanted Coveney but the parliamentary party chose Leo ?
