Hi,

Does anyone know why you can't register a birth until the baby is three weeks old?

Has anyone managed to register sooner?

I don't believe there's any limit as to how soon after the birth you can register it but it has to be done with 42 days. Is it just there's no appointments available where you are?

Sorry just realised you're in Ireland, ignore my reply above!

Have never heard of three weeks before, registration was done before we left hospital...

I've never heard of this. Usually they said to us give it a week and that way the paperwork will definitely be sent over. I'd say it's due to sickness or staff shortages for whatever reason and there is a backlog in your area. It's definitely not a rule

Just to say, we got an emergency birth registrations appointment (in Ireland) as we live between Ireland and the Uk and needed to travel. We did have to provide proof, and explain (travel was for access to support etc) but everyone was kind. So it’s always worth contacting the local registrations office directly. (I notified them in advance: and made contact within 48 hours of birth)

This is exactly what I was looking to know thanks. What county are you in?
