Short-term/holiday homes

We are considering whether a move to Ireland from the UK might be for us.

To me, the best way to know would be to try it for a while, so I've been looking to rent a house for a month next spring/summer (and possibly to do the same in 2024) to give us an extended experience of what day-to-day life would be like.

I've scoured Vrbo, Airbnb and holiday lettings websites and daft.ie and others that might have short-lease options, but I'm turning up very few results. Whilst I imagine that might by symptomatic of the wider issues in Ireland with availability of rental accommodation, I also wouldn't look beyond it being the case that I'm simply not looking in the right places!

Could you let me know of any websites that you'd recommend me trying please? If location helps, we're looking at Waterford or somewhere coastal in Wicklow, i.e. Greystones or Bray.

Thanks in advance.

The Wicklow areas you are looking at and parts of Waterford are in Rent Pressure Zones, which means short-term lets are very restricted. The regulations are a bit of a mess at the moment but this might explain why you are seeing so few on offer:

From 3 November 2022, online platforms, such as Airbnb, will no longer be able to advertise properties for short-term let if the properties do not have the correct planning permission. This rule is in place for 6 months until a registration system for short-term lets and holiday lets is developed. Homeowners will have to register short-term lets and holiday lets with Failte Ireland under this new registration system, which is expected to be established in 2023 - from Citizens’ Information - Short Lets

You could possibly contact a few estate agents in areas you are looking at and enquire - they may be able to point you to good places to find options.

Ah @Blogdog, thank you so much.

That likely explains it and may hamper our search for next year. I've family in Waterford and its surrounds so I'll perhaps drop them a line too to see if they could point me in the right direction.

You could try trident holiday homes? Tend to be more holiday village type place though.

Are there any hotels locally with holiday homes attached. I'm not familiar with that part of the country so I wouldn't know . When we moved house nearly six years ago we rented a holiday home in the grounds of a hotel for two months while waiting for our new house to be ready but it was winter so the house wasn't in much demand and obviously a totally different story now with the accommodation crisis but worth a try

Try Dunmore East in Waterford. There seems to be quite a few "holiday villages" in the area.
Dunmore Golf and Holiday Resort was featured recently on a programme called "At Your Service" on RTE 1, it's a bit like the Hotel Inspector show that Alex Polizzi does.
It looked really nice.
Contacting Trident homes as suggested by another poster is a good idea. Also Brookman Town Homes but I think they are just Dublin based.
