Irish Rail Searching Passengers

Hi all, I got the train from Dublin to Cork over the weekend (during the madness of the airshow and the match that caused all the travel disruption) and Irish Rail security were searching bags. Do we have any legal rights in this situation? I'm a 78 year old woman with incontinence and a handbag full of things I'd rather keep private! It just seems ridiculous and unneccessary 😮

Maybe they were searching for alcohol. I know they've really clamped down on drinking. I've got to be honest - I wouldn't care if my bag was searched but I understand you being perturbed by it.

Liveline did a programme on this a couple of weeks back.
An older lady had her wine confiscated but young fellas in her carriage didn't have their slab of beer confiscated and could drink it on the train.
