Moving to the Northern Ireland

Hi everyone.
in a bit of a dilemma here. We live in the UK. I’m Irish and he is from the Uk. We have a lovely life here with our 3 year old. I would ideally like to move back to the my home Southern Ireland but the way things are it seems impossible and my husbands job will allow him work in the North of Ireland not south. I really want to go back before our DS starts school but my DH wants to stay here. My question is I’m sure others have moved from the Uk to the north of Ireland. What is it like is it much difference. It’s a compromise for both of us. Thank you

@PeekabooAtTheZoo that is really interesting and such a real life account. I took a few days in Belfast recently with my teens and we saw titanic et cetera, was surprised by how many people had either a tricolour phone cover or a union jack phone cover, thought it was a bit tribal. Then a year later my DC1 and I went to coleraine which is apparently protestant but the whole time we were there we didn't see a sectarian style phone cover which was a relief.

If you had driven around a few estates in Coleraine you would have seen a few flegs and painted kerbstones, unless it has changed a lot since I escaped!

Can confirm Dalriada is a great school. And a family member of mine went to church with the notorious dentist, there are plenty of bible camps and the like still going on. I do think NI isn't as bad as it used to be for sectarianism, but to deny it is still a factor would be very wrong. Personally I couldn't get away from NI quick enough, and have no regrets whatsoever about leaving, despite the beauty of the area (North Antrim coast)

Belfast and Northern Ireland are to small, no large cities, on the Island, except Dublin

And I’m sorry I’ve re-started the whole south- north Eire ROI thing, I never realised it was a big sensitivity, I’ll slide away elsewhere.

People in Ireland/ROI (where I am) don’t ever get ratty about ROI. We sometimes do get ratty about Southern Ireland or Éire 🫣
Sorry, sorry, but just to set to record straight and so people know.

Southern Ireland is considered by some to be an insult because it was an official name for Ireland for about a year under home rule. It also doesn't make sense as Donegal (in the republic) is in the northern part of Ireland.

It you are "up north" your fine to say "down south" or "the south" but Southern Ireland is always wrongGrin

ROI is totally fine. There was some dispute about the UK continuing to use word Eire officially after we were a republic and officially called ourselves the Republic of Ireland. That's from memory of history in school so happy to be corrected.

If you are ever in doubt just call countries by their official name.

This reminds me so much of the conversations I have with people where I live in Cheshire. They always tell you how much their house is worth, how much they've spent on it. I doubt the bragging goes down well in Ireland!

Well, they'll just have to change that for you won't they!?
