Apparently a homophobic serial killer did it. What the hell! Crazy stuff

OP posts:
Pegasussnail · 13/04/2022 23:21

It's shocking. I didn't realise until the rte news that there were two murders and this cause. So sad.

JaneJeffer · 13/04/2022 23:33

It awful. Those poor men Sad

A gay rugby player got beaten up in Dublin the other day as well.

glinner4prez · 13/04/2022 23:57

Incredibly awful. The Guards have been able to see that the suspect was in contact with the men on social media, apparently.

OP posts:
RachelGreeneGreep · 14/04/2022 19:19

Horrific beyond words. Almost unbelievable.

Pegasussnail · 14/04/2022 20:14

A man has been arrested for both murders and the attack on another man. May they rest in peace

oliviastwisted · 14/04/2022 20:45

Absolutely abhorrent. Totally horrified that this has happened. It is like the Aisling Murphy case just so utterly and unbelievably horrible.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 15/04/2022 08:45

It is horrific. I'm really shocked. May they rest in peace. My thoughts are with their families and friends and the people of Sligo.

bellinisurge · 15/04/2022 12:25

So dreadful.

LadyEloise1 · 15/04/2022 14:56

Shocking and heartbreaking.
Deepest sympathy to their loved ones.

Didn't this happen in manchester too. A homophobe actually set up dates with gay men and then killed them.

@MaudebeGonne I do know where you're coming from. It's a risk to invite somebody you just met online back to your house. That is not the same as saying they deserved what happened. But they put their trust in to much younger man they just met through an app 24 hours earlier. Male, female, gay, straight, Irish, foreign, that is a degree of risk.

oliviastwisted · 16/04/2022 12:10

But if you play dangerous games, you can get dangerous prizes

@MaudebeGonne

That is fucking disgusting and utterly offensive and victim blaming. So fucking what if the men were out hopeful for a ride with another consenting adult so fucking what. It is actually okay for grown men to want to meet their sexual needs with consenting adults. That isn’t some shameful pastime that okays some sick arsehole murdering a person anymore than going for a run. It might be a more high risk activity but it doesn’t justify your murder.

You have really picked up some weird and fucked up morals there.

JoyLurking9to5 · 16/04/2022 12:16

Well, I'm sure maud can defend herself but this is the problem with deleting the post. Now nobody can read that she did start by saying that she has nothing but sympathy for their families and that they did not deserve what happened to them.

I did internet dating for a few years and I was always afraid I wasn't being cautious enough. None of those people I met up with knew any of my acquaintances, so there was no known connection. Investigators always look for somebody connected to the victim and if the connection isn't known, it's a danger.

They moderation is so trigger happy on mumsnet these days. Had a post deleted earlier because I suggested to a woman with three children that she didn't have to continue with the pregnancy given that the father of her baby was blackmailing her.

Think it's more balanced to just leave the post. So others would have phrased it differently.

Abhannmor · 16/04/2022 12:22

A serial killer murdered 5 gay men in London when I lived there , before the Internet. You'd wonder if these scumbags are closet gays themselves? I do think online dating carries risk but we are where we are. There are young people who don't know how to meet someone any other way. It's appalling to think this guy is only 22. He has to go down for 30 years....or people will start using vigilante methods.

JoyLurking9to5 · 16/04/2022 12:23

I think they must be. That has to be some kind of internal battle going on in themselves.

What I really objected to was Mauds assertion that these men weren’t allowed to be seen as victims in the same way that Aisling Murphy was Joy because they didn’t meet the moral criteria of going for a run versus meeting a man online. That is actually victim blaming.

JoyLurking9to5 · 16/04/2022 12:33

Fair enough,
I objected to her post being deleted because I think it's now unclear what was actually said.

Women's safety is a concern for them even when they're not doing anything at all risky. So lumping the two tragedies in together does minimise the risk that is constant in women's lives but not constant in men's lives.

JaneJeffer · 16/04/2022 12:58

Jesus this is Ireland where a person should be able to invite someone to their house, even for sex, without getting murdered. Those men deserve every bit of sympathy just as much as if he attacked them outside their home. There's only one man to blame here and it's neither of the victims.

Absolutely agree, and have nothing but sympathy for the two men whose lives were taken in such a horrific manner.
TheVeryThing · 17/04/2022 17:20

So so shocking. Agree that these men were doing nothing wrong and should have been safe. It seems their killer went looking for victims so if he hadn’t found them that way he would have found them another.

LadyEloise1 · 18/04/2022 08:59

A British tourist was attacked and seriously injured in Temple Bar over the weekend and an Italian tourist was hospitalised because of injuries he received when attacked by a gang who allegedly also attacked the rugby player who went public with his injuries.
Where are the Gardai ?
Why are more not deployed on the streets ?
I got really cross yesterday evening, Easter Sunday, at about 7 pm when I saw 3 guards deployed at a notorious speed trap check where a dual carriageway speed is 60 kph ( windy country roads can be 80 to 100 kph ) !
What a waste of resources.
Who makes these decisions. Sad

Puppalicious · 18/04/2022 09:14

@JoyLurking9to5 but in a way that’s what made me so very uncomfortable with the public outpouring of grief around Aisling Murphy, she was the “perfect” victim. Young, pretty with a respectable job, killed while doing something no one could argue should be a risk. It was a terrible tragedy. But that didn’t make her life worth more than anybody else. Her life was not worth more than these two men’s lives. Her life was not worth more than poor Urantsetseg’s life, a murder I found as chilling (and more directly relevant to my life) and they couldn’t even convict the boy who did it 🙁

RachelGreeneGreep · 18/04/2022 14:46

Michael Snee's family have requested that the media stay away from his funeral. I hope that this request has been respected.

I hope that the vigils held nationwide will help the families and friends of both men, even in some small way, at this horrific time.
