Can I get one as an Irish citizen living in the uk? Instead of the new UK scheme?

I think you can if you're an Irish citizen.

If you have the expired EHIC number you can renew online. DH had lost his card and didn't know the number but we were so helpful when he phoned the local office last week, the staff member did the renewal over the phone, issued a temporary one as we're going on holidays on Monday but we got our new cards yesterday.

If you're not allowed get the new card because you live in the UK if you have the old EHIC number and can renew online you could have it sent to an Irish address and get it sent on to you.
