Hopefully they'll go back to basics this year - last year was hard going at times.

I will with my dd.

Deadringer · 22/11/2021 19:33

The dc, even the adult ones insist on watching it as a family, it's so bloody long! I am not usually home on a Friday night but this year i am and i have no excuse not to watch.

Pucarbuile · 22/11/2021 19:38

I've just realised we'll need to dig out the saorview box to watch it Confused. Looking forward to it though.

PleasantBirthday · 22/11/2021 19:43

Yeah, I have great memories of watching it as a kid, being allowed to stay up late (we would end up falling asleep and Dad would lift us to bed) and getting a treat that we were allowed to eat in the sitting room! Of course, actually getting the toys on the show was out of the question, they were curiosities of the world, like American Christmas trees.

I don't think my daughter will ever enjoy it as much. I'm not strict (or organised) enough to be able to make a tiny dairy milk on the floor in front of the TV any kind of once a year novelty!

I thought last year was actually quite good. I'm not bothered either way but the dc will want to stay up to watch it only because everyone will . I know they'd much rather watch something else

3luckystars · 22/11/2021 19:44

100%

TheVeryThing · 22/11/2021 19:48

I don’t think so. Teenage son is too old for it and it’s just sensory overload for the younger one (asd). I always wished they would start it earlier, it feels like a bit on an endurance test!
I have fond memories of it from my childhood, though.

Blogdog · 25/11/2021 18:05

We’ll probably watch some of it and then record the rest (so we can fast forward through the non-toy bits on Saturday).

I also hope they’ll go back to basics @PleasantBirthday - I felt last year was a show aimed at adults and not children. It was lovely in parts but my kids were bored stupid for most of it and a bit of balance between the toys and wholesome stories wouldn’t go amiss.

PleasantBirthday · 25/11/2021 18:11

Yeah. I mean, the families were lovely but it's quite late for small children without lots of talk, no toys!

I love it. In fact, I've taken the day off work so we can put the Christmas tree and decorations up. It's a bit early for me but my teenage DD was insistent that we put them up today. So we'll spend the afternoon decorating (she gets a half-day on Fridays) and then get a take away and lounge in front of the fire.

For those of you complaining that it's on late, that's the whole point of it - being allowed to stay up late to watch it. And you can always record it and watch it again tomorrow or Sunday.

TheVeryThing · 26/11/2021 11:00

Sounds like you're all set for it Taytocrisps. Great that your DD still wants to watch with you, have fun!

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 26/11/2021 11:09

Can't wait! Even the older DC are looking forward to it. It's tradition isn't it? Grin I have all the snacks/treats in (plus wine for myself!!) we'll wear our Christmas jumpers/jammies and allow ourselves to just be christmassy for the night.

Pucarbuile · 26/11/2021 22:04

Things are not starting well for Ryan tonight 🤣

Ballygowenwater · 26/11/2021 22:10

My 4 year old has lasted longer than I expected!

gabsdot45 · 26/11/2021 22:11

I'm watching it now. Alone. Neither of my teens were interested.
I loved last year's. It was so moving.
So far I'm bored tonight with this one..

3luckystars · 26/11/2021 22:51

Ah lads it’s brutal

MindyStClaire · 26/11/2021 22:51

I'm watching. I think they've got the mix wrong. I don't want the toy show to tug at my heart strings, I just want a laugh.

Taytocrisps · 26/11/2021 22:59

I enjoyed the opening number but it was very slow to get going after that. He spent ages showing the different coloured bears and talking about cancelled nativity plays etc. I'd say the kids were very bored, waiting to see the toys.

ReiltinDubh · 26/11/2021 23:15

So disappointed with it tonight, as is my 10yo. Not enough toys by far. And the shots of the audience just emphasise the lack of atmosphere

saleorbouy · 26/11/2021 23:38

It's my first one, what's all the hype about. It's so boring. I was expecting so much more! Everyone else fell asleep on the sofa and I've changed channel to watch Graham Norton.

3luckystars · 26/11/2021 23:39

CRINGING

This makes me so sad. Try again next year, it's donkeys since I haven't enjoyed one.
Ballygowenwater · 26/11/2021 23:44

I always hate that the book section is at the very end when they’re running out of time.

Gooseysgirl · 26/11/2021 23:48

Yeah I could have lived without the party pieces and heard more about the books instead of Ryan throwing them on the floor!!! It's being broadcast all over the world - a fantastic opportunity to showcase Irish Childrens authors.

3luckystars · 26/11/2021 23:48

It’s so staged and not anything to do with Christmas really.
