Using Leaving Certificate results in UK

Hi,

Not sure if anyone will be able to help here, but any advice is much appreciated.

I'm from Ireland but living in the UK and I've started a Level 3 course/apprenticeship. My tutor has said I need to complete maths and English functional skills training, which I wouldn't have to do if I had GCSEs. I have leaving certificate Maths and English, but she says they can't accept those.

I really don't understand why - as Leaving Cert is a higher qualification than GCSE. I feel this is really unfair. Has anyone had any success in using Leaving Certificate results for a course in the UK?

Good question. 15 years ago I was accepted on the GTP in London and no one questioned my LC results, mind you, I had my degree as well. Is she definitely right? I'm a teacher and I've taught both GCSE and LC and LC is so much higher level. GCSE is like Junior Cert, I guess.

Leaving cert results are acceptable for degree courses in the UK, so they should be more than acceptable for what you are doing.

If you look up the entrance requirements for Irish students on any university's website it might be enough to convince your tutor that you have a higher level qualification than GCSEs and have no need of functional skills training.

Would this help? www.enic.org.uk/Qualifications/SOC/Default.aspx

Those are really helpful links Ginger, they should help the OP out.

I think it's bonkers too.

I had to do functional skills as part of a level 3 course for work too despite having stem a levels (so obviously reasonably proficient at maths and English) but couldn't find my GCSE certificates.

Enrollment said they've had degree educated people having to do it too and it's all just a bit 'computer says no'

Thanks all. I contacted the course provider again and unfortunately like @BillywigSting says it’s just a case of GCSE or nothing. She said they’ve had people with masters in maths who couldn’t find their GCSE certificates so still had to do the functional skills. It’s so frustrating Angry
