Help me with my stupid question about "proper"Guinness glasses

DS has got into drinking Guinness.
He has asked for a "proper" Guinness glass for Christmas
Now I am of proper Irish stock through and through..but living in UK .
What does he mean ?
I have seen some that have indentations at the bottom ,instead of a smooth all the way down glass ?

My dad never cared what he had his Guinness in !
(Got a few of them still in the cupboard ..thanks dad (RIP, god rest his soul))
DAD would be so proud his grandson wants to drink his can (!!) properly.
Any advise what I should be looking for ?
Thanks .

All our ones came free with 10pk of cans or walking out of bar with unfinished pints

Sadly no cans currently in house to check & I’ve been drinking juice out my current glass all day so too grubby to post Blush

Keep eye out for promo packs - usually some in off-licenses near big student areas.

@bizzey I asked my husband who managed a bar for years - he reckons this? From the Guinness website

You can get personalised ones from the Guinness Storehouse (visitor experience) in Dublin

@RJnomore1 (hello !)
Yes that was the swirly bottom I was talking about .
Never see them in pubs though ?

Could he mean that the glasses you use at home don't have the proper widget in them, which actually gives Guinness its head so he wants a real one?

bizzey · 16/10/2021 02:21

Ohh the widget in the glass
( Is that such a thing ...)
He has been talking about a widget .

I thought he was talking about the widget in the can.

Now it makes,sense .
Yes the widget inthe glass.

You pour the can through something ?

I'd imagine branded. They're generally curvey narrower at bottom.

Of course the settle is the most important thing!

In the end it's the quality of the drink and a proper pour that is important! I can't imagine anyone would turn down cos not 'right' glass!

I bet Guinness have a really good shop online for all that stuff!

Cocomumma · 16/10/2021 10:56

Guiness glasses have an inbuilt widget and the bottom is slightly sloped, as do the cans which with the perfect pour gives it the correct head!
You will never get a good pint of Guinness if you just use a regular glass for that very reason.

I've worked in hospitality for over 15 years and this week alone I have spent 20 hours training bar staff on how to pour the perfect pint of Guiness, it's been a long processGrin

So if he wants a real Guiness glass I would order a branded one, or ask at your local bar I'm sure someone would be kind enough to let you have one.

If he's into 'proper' Guinness as such, I'd really recommend investing in the new Nitrosurge device. It clicks onto the top of a can, so you can pour a proper creamy pint (2 step pour, naturally 😋)

bizzey · 16/10/2021 15:16

Thank you .
That nitrosurge seems to be what he is talking about .
Only available in NI and ROI .

Not sure if he has been promoted to Guinness pouring yet !

The swirly one is more modern, this is more traditional.
It is a half pint though, but the right shape of a pint (which is why I borrowed it from a pub many moons agoBlush)
There is an amusing insta account called shitelondonguinness which will show you a range of glasses for inspiration Grin

If you have Irish family, could you get the Nitrosurge posted to them and ask them to post it to you? Bit of a faff, I know.

junebirthdaygirl · 16/10/2021 21:54

My ds got Guiness glasses in Lidl. Had the logo and came in pairs. They are exactly the right size for his can of Guinness. Unfortunately Lidl only do them at random times but keep an eye out as they might come in soon for Christmas.

AdaColeman · 04/11/2021 01:10

If you shop at Ocado @bizzey they now have a gift box of a can of Guinness, a toucan can opener and a tankard, sounds like just what you need!

bizzey · 04/11/2021 12:55

@AdaColeman Thank you so much for that !
I have used ocado ,,,and I have goodwill gesture money in the account as they couldn't deliver something on my last order !
Going to check it out now .👌

OP posts:
AdaColeman · 04/11/2021 14:26

It's £12 @bizzey, but the tankard of course has a handle, would your DS be OK with that? I hope so!

TartanDMs · 04/11/2021 14:35

Might be a really bad thing to admit here but I would be tempted to liberate one from a pub.

peppersauce1984 · 09/11/2021 14:40

My dh has proper Guinness glasses. They are smaller than a pint which means when you pour from a tin it fills it to the top and looks proper.
